Domestic Shipping of Cats and Kittens
(Within the United States)
This page focuses on shipping as cargo, not carry-on services.

See page two for international regulations.
Or contact the Consulate of the Country you are shipping to.

Shipping Your Cat or Kitten - The Basics
The US Department of Agriculture and the International Air Transport Association
regulate the shipping of live animals.  These are the rules that you must follow.
 U.S.D.A. (1-800-545-8732)
The Carrier or Kennel
Required Labeling
Guidelines for Kennel Contents
The Health Certificate
(A Government Requirement)
Certification and Feeding
(A USDA Requirement)
  • Be constructed out of rigid plastic, wood, metal, or material of comparable strength.
  • Have functional handles on the kennel's exterior to prevent tilting and any direct contact with the animals
  • Close securely, but not lock, allowing personnel to open it in case of emergency
  • Have labels with the words "Live Animals" in letters at least 1-inch tall on the crate's top and on at least one side
  • Have upright arrow labels indicating kennel's correct position
  • Kennels must conform to IATA guidelines and USDA regulations.  So buy one with a tag that says, "Conforms to IATA and USDA regulations, " or "Airline Approved."

Carriers are marked, "LIVE ANIMAL," by the airlines in neon orange or green tape.  All carriers are labeled with the name, addresses, and phone numbers of both the shipper and the buyer.  A copy of the shipping information should be enclosed in a zip-locked plastic bag and tapped inside the carrier, either to the top, or under the bedding on the bottom.  Your cat or kitten's call name should be taped to the carrier.

  • Contain some type of bedding, either shredded paper or towels, to absorb any "accidents"
  • I place the cat's bed inside the carrier, it's snug, and allows for added security.
  • Contain two dishes -- one for food and one for water -- attached to the inside of the kennel door. They must be easily accessible Cargo agents without opening the kennel door.

  • Display feeding instructions and food, if applicable. These instructions should be affixed to the top of the kennel, along with shipper and consignee information.

Only one cat, or two kittens, less than 6 months old per kennel.

It is a good idea to fill the water container with ice cubes that will gradually melt.

Airlines require a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian.

The health certificate must be dated within 10 days for the date of departure.

A separate vaccination certificate may also be required.

Kittens must be at least 8 weeks old.   Most breeders prefer to wait until the kitten is between 12 to 16 weeks of age before shipping.  Health certificates are also required for international flights with additional signatures from State veterinarians, please see international travel guidelines for each country.

Information needed on the certificate provided at the airport:

Written notification that the animal has been offered food and water within 4 hours before delivery to the airline,  and the time and date of last food and water.

Specific feeding and watering instructions for a 24 hour period.

Can not say, "Do not feed."

Cats over 16 weeks old must be offered food every 24 hours and water every 12 hours.

Kittens less than 16 weeks old must be offered food and water at least once every 12 hours.

This data must be signed, timed, and dated, by the shipper.

    Some general information concerning temperatures:
    TEMPERATURE RESTRICTIONS:
    HEAT RESTRICTIONS:
    COLD RESTRICTIONS:
Temperature restrictions have been established to ensure animals are not exposed to extremes of heat or cold in animal holding areas, terminal facilities, when moving animals between terminal facilities and aircraft, or on aircraft awaiting departure for more than 45 minutes. The restrictions have no relationship to the actual air at Airport Ticket Offices unless conditions are such that lengthy connect/ground times or off-schedule operations would jeopardize animals exposed for more than 45 minutes.
This means animals may not be accepted to travel if the temperature is above 85 degrees or below 45 degrees for longer than 45 minutes anywhere along the travel route.  Cargo compartments are pressurized, and maintain a temperature range of 50-70 degrees. Carbon dioxide is minimized by limiting the number of pets in the hold at any one time.
Cats and kittens must not be subjected to surrounding temperature exceeding 85 degrees (Farenheit) for more than 45 minutes. Cats and kittens must not be subjected to surrounding temperature which is below 45 degrees (Farenheit) for more than 45 minutes.
