....And now the News that is Family News Here is the page of past/present/recent events in and around the house. In brief whatever I can think of to talk about in a general nature will be here. Also note the editing has much to be desired, randomly I add and edit with abandon often with a date but not always. Seen this page? There is a sequel, Family News 2 is ready for your approval.
1997 1998 D2M I'm sure images and certain proprietary items are here somewhere, they at all times belong to/ registered to the respective owners, you know who you are.
Karin
As you may already know the streets are no longer safe, Karin has her drivers licence. She is doing well in High School (grade 11) and her last report card included second class honours. Hey girls & guys, When writing to Karin please put in the subject header something like KHM or Karin to let the rest of us know it is for her. I don't really think reading someone else's mail is very prudent. like U know what I mean, like. Soccer and surfing the web are passions lately. She was in a tourney and came away with a silver medal. Good job. She has a couple of tethered metal items now.

970901 - Karin is using a Rocket Mail address for her mail. I'm not going to say that some of those who write her are less than fully inflated, but there is some of course that have NO idea that she was part of a family that also use email.

971005 - The teachers here want to strike for more money. They are working to rule and I think if they continue the public should take a stand. I can understand the reasons but they are just like the rest of us, times are tough. Karin is now in Grade 12 and with some extra work on her part she is doing very well.

980428 - Well the day has come when the youngest has taken yet another step and secured gainfull employment. She as well as her sister are now Safeway clerks. Imagine, going to the grocery store and paying your daughter for your groceries, actually they discourage family members from doing so (another check out would be wise), they have funny ideas. I remember at one time this was possibly the best paying job a kid could get, no so anymore, a couple bucks above the minimum for part time but they will be busy and this is good. The summer is comming and the long days waiting for friends to finish work will be better spent doing the same.

980519 - Grad is upon us! I say us because it is an event that all are included. Everyone from several dozen shoe stores to limo drivers, I still cannot get over the hoopla, mind you it was grade 12 after all. The kids had a great time and "they" say they are happy school is done and over.

980821 - Karin has changed jobs already! Actually she has 2 jobs now, one at Eaton's and also Safeway. Safeway does not want to let her go so they will work out a schedule around her new job, now how many times have you heard of that!

Sherri
Sherri is stll auditing and seems to be getting by. Her hours allow her to get out early enough to be home at 4:00. Another dangerous milestone has been set, she has her own cellular. Car, job, phone, chequing account, look out! The same applies when writing to Sherri, SKM or similar would be nice. Sherri and Dan are still an item.

980428 - As the bottom of the left column and above indicates the girls have new jobs! The audit-sweat-shop is done and over. Breathe freely.
970705 - Well an item it seems for a bit longer! Today they announced they will take the next step, after their apartment search and during dinner out with family as witnesses, they are engaged to be married. As the ol' man what can I say, good luck kids! Now would be a good time for words of wisdom and when I get those words I will use the wisdom to bring them forth.
970801 - Well that day has come, the baby has left the nest. Well maybe not the baby but she was the first baby. S & D have their own place and won't let the folks over until it is ship shape, I wonder if her mother has rubbed off a little? Hmmm. Certainly wasn't me.

970818 - S & D are proud owners of a Mac! Yes indeed, I am very proud. Now we just have to get them connected. This maybe very soon. Look here in the comming months for their address.

971017 - Sherri has a baby! Well not really, but if you ask her about her kitten, it's her baby. Cute little thing as well.
Another! yep now she has another ball of plastic mouse chasing fur.

971219 - Today S&D had a "Furniture Regatta", it seems the floor up stairs had a heating pipe burst and flooded their suite. Wall, ceiling, carpet and other damage will be repaired but then you have the interim dampness, eeeuu. Save the Mac I say, these don't float, the cats will swim! Actually they were pretty well off, the carpet is damp in a few spots and they are doing OK.
980519 - The beasts are getting BIG. Sherri's cats are taking over and are a constant source of entertainment. Dan brought home a laser pointer to drive the animals nuts. From what I saw it will be a while yet before they catch on that it (the spot of red light) is nothing to eat once they catch it. The chase continues.
980530 - 21, imagine Sherri is legal everywhere! Her 21st birthday party was held in the Party room at Mom's condo and a good time was had by all. Thanks Mom! It was a surprize party and I think we pulled it off, the surprize part. We have to party more often, I think I should have a retro 21st birthday party, wanna come?

Carolyn
Carolyn is tuffing it out at the Institute (9 years!). You never know with the government and the cutbacks whether SAIT will stay as it is. Naturally the Same Old office stuff is the norm of the day. She went in for another holter monitor session at the Rockyview and we are waiting for results. Results are in and good!
Sad news at the ol' HR dept, the Macs are gone and replaced by a plethora of wintel boxes and a permanent IT guy. Crash is the sound in the air over there. Win95 and pray. The poor IT guy just gets one going and then over to rescue another, should have stayed with the OS that runs. The Maytag repair & Mac support business is pretty much the same, you can't get rich fixing things that don't break. Too funny that this is an institute of higher learning which teaches this stuff and the Wintel server crashes daily.

980519 - Doctors orders are to take a few days off and recoup. The innards are not doing all that great and a few restful days are welcome. Lately she has been doing much better but then it comes and goes.
980704 - The ol' office is always under turmoil, one of her bud's resigned and the office management is confused. She is still going in part time and we firmly believe the office has a part in her poor health. Maybe it's the office that is sic :) Actually since she has started the mornings only approach, health has been better. Not fixed but better.

980820 - The time has come once again to go under the knife! She will be in the hospital in mid September for another cardiac mapping and hopefully repair. The medical techniques in this area have made considerable improvements since the first time and with this in mind we have been reassured the results will be favourable.
If I can find a link for more on the proceedure I will post it. The Canadian Journal of Cardiology - April 1997 issue has some related topics: Issue 13 04
The PSLgroup has some related topics: Tissue ablation...
I would like to reprint some articles I have found but you know what that means.

980918 - Doc Bob has been in a vehicle accident and the cardiac thing has been delayed for a few weeks. As of today perhaps the first week of Oct. looks good.
981014 - It seems Doc Bob has been a little slower recovering and this will postpone things until November. Hurry up and wait. Really it would be best if he was in top form, agreed.

Don I am a life'r at the phone company (24 years, that would make me an ol' guy!) and it all looks good on a resume but you never know when a guy would have to write one. Over the last few years I have had about eight different jobs. At the moment I am in the Transmission department if it could be called that. We are a meager few (3). It is a sad day at the ol' salt mine, wintel machines everywhere. You can hear them crashing from here, firewalls after firewalls & not a sensible application on any of them. Mind you a couple are running NT and seem to be OK. A guy has on his desk some field portables with at any time about a dozen going in for repair. And they still think it is cost effective, I hang my head in shame to be in the same room. My neck is sore from shaking it.

971025 - Non family news moved to the comment page. This space will be filled again with more random thoughts from the house of D2M.

971121 - Sad news ... Tinker has gone to the big nest. After a very enjoyable stay with us over several years, she was finally overcome by an avian illness that was treated to help her through the last few weeks. She will be missed.

The House Around the house we are still collecting movies and now sporting about 350. Believe it or not there is times when there is nothing on. Go figure. My family tree project is very slowly comming along, I have passed the 30MB threshold. One day I will borrow a scanner and complete another step that has been shelved. 1300 names and growing! Few more details on the Tree page with a fuzzy button at the FrontPage or of course at any time from the navigational gadgets at the top of most pages.
NOTE: The fuzzy buttons are gone :( I know but times have to change.
971008 - Lately as a diversion and to keep the juices flowing I have spent some time learning what is necessary to HTML oneself into a stuper. Perhaps this will be the vehicle of choice for the Fam Tree? I say this because it transcends any format and with an adequate browser at the far end, conversion from the FileMaker format to something a DOS box can understand may prove to be fruitful.

971104 - I have a zip drive! This improves the chances of distribution greatly! 100MB at a single swoop, ooooh, and at 20 bucks a hit not bad.
971125 - The zip drive is truly a nifty gadget. I have 4 disks crammed full of crap. The slogan of Iomega is "for all of your stuff" very true words indeed. The nice thing is you just plug it in and without even a power switch it just works! Shuts down when required and does as it is told, very nice.

980429 - I think I have a zip bug, not the click of death bug but the go-to-the-store-and-buy-more bug. The early drives had a click-of-death bug that seems to be fixed, this has not kept me away from the 100MB disks-o-joy.

Also FileMaker Pro 4 has an internet publishing feature that must be explored. Maybe Santa will have to check his list and see if FMPro4 could be added?

980705 - Well the Trampoline is down and ready for sale! I still think this was the reason for my grey hair. I was thinking to give it to one of the girls, whoever had kids first and watch their hair go grey. But then again that would not be nice now would it? I think I will buy drums and such for the grandkids, the noise should keep them suitably restless and still keep peace of mind that no bones will be broken. Did I say grandkids, bite my tongue! Not yet!

Hey, I found the answer to the pesky extension cord to lawnmower, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, weed eater time honoured problem of these things comming un-plugged. Run, don't walk to the jobber and get some "twist-lok" connectors. This is another one of my grey hair prevention techniques. Plug and twist and never does the fool device come unplugged again. It's great!

To be continued...
