SINGLE RHYTHM

sildancers.gif (3963 bytes)Let’s see what possible movements and steps we can do with the primary single, double and triple rhythm units.
A verbal pattern for a Single Rhythm could be “STEP (touch)”, one step on the first beat of the unit and an unweighted move on the second beat. The unit could either be a left single or a right single.

LEFT SINGLE      STEP on the LEFT FOOT on Count 1, and
TOUCH the RIGHT FOOT to the left foot on Count 2.

RIGHT SINGLE   STEP on the RIGHT FOOT on Count 1, and
TOUCH the LEFT FOOT to the right foot on Count 2.

If we alternate a LEFT SINGLE and a RIGHT SINGLE, we can make a TWO UNIT PATTERN. We would thus be dancing to one measure of music.

In a single rhythm unit, the same foot begins and ends the unit. Thus in a Left Single, the weight is on the left foot for both counts, and in a Right Single, the weight is on the right foot on both counts.
Two succeeding single rhythm units can not start with the same foot. The foot which is free at the end of the first unit begins the second unit.

A secondary unit of the single rhythm is the tap step, used most commonly in the Boogie or Two-Beat Jive Basic. It is also known as a delayed single.
The Left delayed single unit starts with the weight on the right foot, so that the left foot can tap and then step. The next unit, the Right delayed single unit starts with the weight on the left foot, so that the right foot can tap and then step.

The other secondary unit of the single rhythm is the step hop, where one foot steps and the same foot hops. The other foot is free for both counts. A left step-hop  followed by a right step-hop makes two units of hop steps by the left and right foot.
