Buckcherry. Version 2.0.
Someone pass the Kleenex...this is gonna get emotional and shit.
In December of 2004, I got a call from Keith, telling me that he wanted to "give me my Christmas present over the phone". I'll be truthful-my first guess was that marriage proposal I've secretly been waiting for. Hehe. I jest, Keith.
The thought-the very idea-of it having anything to do with Buckcherry- was something I believed to be beyond all possibility. In the years since the demise of my beloved Buckcherry and my ensuing depression over said demise, I've entertained hopeless fantasies of somehow being able to witness the rebirth of Buckcherry.
Having Keith bless me with that very news was like an answered prayer for me- I couldn't have asked for a better "Christmas gift". God bless you, Keith.
Jump to February 2006. Fate bestowed not one, but two, Buckcherry shows upon me: at the El Corazon in Seattle, WA on 02/02, and at the Big Easy in Spokane, WA on 02/04.
El Corazon is a weird venue. Not only is it almost impossible to get to (we spent a fun-filled hour and a half driving around in circles, in the general vicinity but not actually getting there), it's very small and awkwardly arranged. The great thing, for someone like me who likes their shit up close and personal, is that the stage is incredibly small and so is the "seating" (standing!) area. There was maybe a foot separating me from the stage, which gave me the best fuckin' "Keith seat" in the house! Another really awesome thing about the venue is that we were allowed to bring our cameras inside, so for the very first time at a Buckcherry show, I was able to take live shots myself. Talk about awesome! (Click here to see the live shots.)
Most of the Seattle set was comprised of older tunes from the first two CDs. They did a couple of songs from the new CD, Fifteen, an obscure song or two, and encored with "Crushed". The three newest members of Buckcherry seemed completely at ease with Keith and Josh, and it reflected a much lighter, almost happier Buckcherry. Five guys who really seemed to enjoy being there and playing together. The one drawback to the entire evening was that it was much too loud! If I hadn't already known the words to the songs by heart, I wouldn't have been able to discern a single word; it all became so much buzzing in my ears. (In fact, my poor friend Michelle ended up getting vertigo and went home from work ill the next day from it!)
The most memorable moment, for me, came during a lull between songs. Josh was taking a break for some water, and Keith was fiddling with the neck of his guitar. They both leaned in and said something to one another, and Keith grinned from ear to ear and gave Josh a playful punch in the arm. It sounds so corny, but as emotional as I was throughout the whole evening, what with the resurrection of my beloved Buckcherry, I actually sprouted tears and got all clutched up in the throat over that. It was a sight that I thought I'd never witness again, so being there that night was pretty nostalgic and emotional for me. They went through so much shit to get to where they are today, and seeing the show in Seattle really brought that home for me.
See you in Spokane, boys...!
02/04/06: Spokane, Washington
I wasn't going to do it. Go to Spokane, that is! But how could I NOT, knowing my boys were playing? So after the Seattle show and one day to recover, my girlfriend Lynnea and I set out for a five-hour (one WAY!) trip from Vancouver, WA to Spokane, WA. No boys this time...hehe Just us and some good road music and lottttttts of road in between me and Keith.
We got there in the afternoon and got a room directly behind the venue, the Big Easy. (If you ever need to stay in Spokane overnight for any reason, you should know that their motel rooms are CHEAP...even during the weekends.) At about 3:30 pm or so we sauntered over to the venue; I was hoping to catch Keith beforehand, and I wanted to let him know I was there since I was getting on the band's guestlist. (Ah, the perks of fandom...lol) We happened to arrive during soundcheck, so we sat outside and listened to them tune up and get dialed in. Afterward, Keith came out, we talked for a bit, then unfortunately he had to get to the radio station with Josh, so we were on our own until the show.
The Big Easy is a much different venue than the El Corazon. Besides being an all-ages show, the venue is set up so that there's tons of room, both standing and sitting in the back areas at tables and booths. Unfortunately, they made Lynnea and I check our cameras at the coat check area, so I wasn't able to take live shots at this show. The sound was incredible, though, and it made the show MUCH more enjoyable rather than almost painful due to the loudness. The boys looked a little more polished this particular evening: Josh was done up as usual, but somehow he just looked more "Hollywood" to me! Keith, on the other hand, was wearing his cowboy hat and a dress shirt that was unbuttoned down the front to reveal bare flesh!!! ...and it was lovely. LOL
Aside from a technical problem for Keith during "You", the set went off flawlessly. Our boys rocked the joint, as usual! After the show, Keith came out and I was able to corral him for a few undisturbed minutes in a corner...alone...to look at....photos...from the Seattle show. (Yeah, I know, I was hoping for something juicier there TOO...) We took some pics together, shared a smoke, and just spent some time out in the FREEZING weather together talking. He was so sweet, nearly risking hypothermia for me and all of the other fans milling about that he so graciously signed EVERYTHING for and posed for every asked-for fan photo. That's Keith for you, though. :-)

It's
often quoted that "necessity is the mother
of invention". I had no idea just how true
that wise bit of philosophy was until I had the
absolutely thrilling privilege of meeting the
Object of My Affection: Buckcherry guitarist and
all-around Cool Guy Extraordinaire, Keith Nelson.
What a guy! What a mesmerizing musician! Mr.
Nelson (Our Esteemed Leader, as his breathless
followers sometimes refer to him...okay usually
it's just me...!) is a doll-an
unaffected and sincere individual who's
exceptionally rare among today's painfully
uninspired rock and rollers. My adoring and
appreciative eyes see in Keith so many wonderful
things: talent, energy, sincerity, a disarmingly
good-natured disposition, a commanding presence
that is utterly riveting, both onstage and off,
and an enthusiasm and passion for the music he
makes with Buckcherry that is exciting to
witness. Keith is unusually down-to-earth and
unpretentious ...a guy who is appreciative of
Buckcherry's rapidly growing circle of fiercely
loyal fans (fanatics?!?) and never fails to
express HIS fondness for THEM. For us. :-)
All of these things, as well as
the incredible inspiration and passion that
Buckcherry's music has brought back into my
lifelong love affair with rock and roll, became
that spark of necessity that ultimately led me to
create Keithaholics Anonymous-the
first website in the world
created about and dedicated exclusively to
Keith and his fabulous talent. This is my humble
thank you to Keith, and a gift to all the other
"Keithaholics" out there like myself
who are acutely and chronically
"addicted" to the sheer perfection that
is Keith Nelson. HE'S JUST A
SWEETHEART!!! AND WE ADORING SUBJECTS JUST CAN'T
CONTAIN OUR AFFECTIONATE DISPLAYS OF
ADMIRATION!!! Hence...Keithaholics Anonymous. One
big happy Keith addicted family!! Keith's (and
Buckcherry's) fans are a close knit, friendly
bunch of people, I've come to find. I hope those
who frequent this site come to regard it as a
tribute to our Esteemed Leader, and take comfort
in knowing that they are most definitely NOT
alone in their madness...
And to Keith
personally...I hope this can
express to you even a fraction of the
gratitude, appreciation, and respect I feel for
you and for Buckcherry. The gift of your music
has enriched my life for so many reasons. You
are one of those reasons. *bows humbly*
Keith Nelson...you ROCK, my good
man.
