The White City

Merida is the capital of Yucatan and it is a special Spanish style city built on top of ancient Mayan Ruins. Merida is also the cleanest city in Mexico (Even though it has over 1 000 000 people). And it has the title of "The White City" because of this cleanliness.

I believe you will enjoy Merida because there is good food, shopping, and many interesting sites. And the greatest thing is that even though it has a touristy neighbour like Cancun, Merida has *NOT* lost its culture and still retains many Euro-Mex features. This definately is "A wonderful city of colonial buildings, wrought iron decor, quaint narrow streets, lush green parks, fountains and horse drawn carriages." - Yucatan today, The Tourist Guide.

  • How to Get To Merida

Now thanks to Continental Airlines, it is much easier and cheaper to arrive in Merida. All you have to do is land in Houston and for the same price of a ticket from Houston-Cancun, you can go Houston-Merida instead!

But if you are going to be landing in Cancun first you can make your first stop a tour or normal bus to Merida. The bus will cost you close to 10 dollars a person and it is about a 3 hour ride. I recommend taking a bus line called Nuevos Horizontes -- Class Elite. They offer comfortable roomy seats, curtained windows, onboard luggage space, 2 movies and AIR CONDITIONING. But there are other bus lines as well. Please visit my Buslines page for more info.

I do not recommend the busline ADO because they robbed over 200 dollars from me as well as some important documents (ALL identification and credit cards as well as a bible) when I forgot them on the bus, and since it was the last bus of the day and we were the last to get off, then it was one of their employees and they didn't do a thing about it. I hope they enjoyed my education money!!!!!!!!

NOTE: Take care when using taxi's, they are the most expensive way you can travel in Mexico and will cost you lots of money, especially if you go to and from the airport. As well, you will notice that the taxi's don't have meters in them. You will need to bargain the price instead BEFORE you get in the taxi and begin. (Only bargain if there is no set price, sometimes in your hotel you will see the cost of prices to go to certain places) If you forget to bargain, they might try to take advantage of you and charge you more.

    Beaches

Although Yucatecan Beaches are somewhat different from Cancun (the sand and water color are not the same) they are certainly not a dissapointment. Blue clear waters in summer, mixed with white sand, it is a wonderful experience. The beaches are almost never crowded, and you can find many interesting items lying around; like shells, peddlers, mexican children, restaurants, stores, houses, apartments, just about anything. They are also kept fairly clean but like any beach, watch out for the broken bottles.

It is quite easy to rent a house or apartment on the beach. Usually they have a swimming pool and other things available, depending on who and where you rent from. If you see seaweed in the water, don't be grossed out. As a rule, most places don't like to clean that layer of weed near the shore because it protects the white sand from washing away. Here are some nice areas you can visit:

Progresso - The pretty port city of Progresso (which has miles of white sand beaches) is only 36km away from Merida (30 miles) and it offers some wonderful swimming, tanning, shopping, lounging as well as several dance clubs near by (Crazy Wetch is a good one). You can even rent a condo on the beach if you wish.

Club Maeva (Telchac Puerto) - is a wonderful all inclusive beach resort that many Canadian Snow Birds flock to. For less than 140 canadian a day, you can relax in the pool, work out in the gym, drink free beer, sit on the beach, party at night and eat free food. In fact, it is just as nice as any Cancun hotel, only you can stay here for like 1/5 th of the price......:) Located just outside of Progresso, it is very close to the Capital of Yucatan.

Other Beaches: Chicxulub, Uaymitún, San Benito, San Bruno, Xtampú, San Crisanto, Chabihau, Santa Clara, Dzilam de bravo, Rio Lagartos, and Las Coloradas. All of them are white sand beaches with the warm blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

    Ruins

Pyramids -The ancient ruins of Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Kabah, Dzibilchaltún are only a bus ride away from Merida. Well, even Merida has it's own ruins! These ancient pyramids are older than 1000 years and make excellent memories. Plus, people are allowed to freely walk and climb them, so you don't always have to

As you've noticed, Merida is truly a great city and it is a gateway to other facinating places. Resorts like Cancun are beautiful, but prices are high, beaches are crowded, and its so americanized there is nothing truly new to discover. Personally, when I vacation, I want to lay back, see interesting new sites and not have to go through all the hassels. The Yucatan peninnsula is a hidden jewel, unspoiled and ready for exploration.
