Shopping

Everyone likes Souvieners

No doubt that when you arrive, you will want to buy souvieners, because this is your vacation and I'm also sure you have heard that you can buy stuff sooooo cheap in Mexico. Well that is right in some cases -- if you buy stuff in the proper places. Americans will also find this stuff VERY CHEAP because your dollar usually equals 8-10 pesos, where as the Canadian dollar is only 5-7 pesos. I encourange Canadians to exchange their dollars for US ones. You will get a good exchange in Canada, and then change your US dollars for pesos here, and you will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better off.

The problem is, is that since the big cities usually attract all the travellers, like some huge resort town, you will need to be very careful. Here's why.....

    Big Cities

Big cities are usually visited the most and because of this, tourists are prime targets to be taken advantage of. The resort of Cancun is a great example. Being very Americanized, most people feel right at home when shopping in the malls, bazars or flea markets. Unfortunately this is the idea.....the locals want you to go shop in those places because then with all the tourists, they can raise their prices and no one will take much notice. Itīs sad, but it works......especially if one travels to tourist attractions, like the Hard Rock Cafe, LaBoom, popular beach areas or even ancient ruins.

    Shopping Tips

There are many shopping tips to be offered but I guess the biggest shopping tip I can give you is to use your common sense and trust your instincts. There have been several cases of scams happening right inside the big hotels, so remember the saying, ĻIf it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.Ļ Anyways, here are several good shopping LESSONS that I think anyone travelling to Mexico should know:

  • Number ONE! What ever you do, DO NOT SHOW YOUR MONEY. There are several serious and common sense reasons for this.
    a) If you show your money, especially if you show you have a lot of it, the sellers will most likely NOT give you a very good bargain. They want to get a good deal too, and if they see you have lot's of money, they will be happy to rip you off.
    b) And most important, it can be very very dangerous to show your money, remember that many people in Mexico are poor and some might hold you up, steal your cash or take you to a bank machine and force you to take out money.
  • Secondly, try not to look like a tourist. When the people know that you are not familiar with prices of goods, they might try to over charge you and you won't even know it!!! Or even better, make some friends in Mexico, and invite them to go shopping with you. Once the people see you have someone smart and knowledgable of Mexican prices, they will probably give you a better deal.

  • Another good idea, like you do at home, is to bargain hunt. Sometimes, a walk down the beach to a less touristic area will find you the exact same item for 75% less.
  • Here is one story I heard from a tourist....He said while in a resort, in the city, a person could buy a bottle of coke for $1.25, or if they wanted to, walk a little ways down the beach and buy the same sized bottle of coke for $0.50. So as you can see, even though Mexico is famous for having low prices, as a tourist, you still might have to look for your bargain.
