Budapest, Hungary-- My sister and one of her friends decided to come to Hungary and then tour Europe with just a backpack, a Eurail pass, and our wits to guide us along. Our tour started in Budapest the last week in June 2000. I had just finished my English teaching stint in a school there and was ready to see even more of Europe. I enjoyed sharing a city that most people never see with others. After a full day in Budapest, we left for Vienna and then Rome. Recommendations: Spend most of your time near the Danube (Duna) River with the Castle District and Fisherman's Bastion. The City Park in center Pest is worth the metro ride. Take in the Millenium Statue that celebrates 1000 years of Hungary being a country. See the decrepit hand of the founder and first king of Hungary, Saint Steven, in the church of the same name in Pest. Absolutely morbid. (I've seen people pray to it!) And for heaven's sake, start calling the city Budape-sh-t because the Hungarian -s is pronounced -sh. Just like Paris is pronounced (but not spelled) Parish. Left: July 7, 2000 |
