Friends, Romans, countrymen--The view from St. Peter's dome onto the St. Peter's square below. Rome, Italy--The city of Rome will romance you with its church spires, statues, and fountains. There is a reason Rome has remained an important city in the world's history and why its civilization has spread across Europe. Its beauty has remained where weak governments have ended. The most memorable parts for this trip were hearing the Pope speak at his weekly address in St. Peter's square and having mass in the awe-inspiring Vatican. Recommendations: Spend an entire day within the huge Vatican and Vatican Museum (not connected together, ask for directions). Have mass there and then climb the claustrophobic stairs to the top of the dome. While climbing, thank God that you're short because the stairs get so constricting that after a while you have to lean to the right to continue climbing. July 9-12, 2000 |
