• Data from a web posting re explanation of Gonau alias - Matthews' History of St. Ives remarks on the use of aliases in the parish and thinks that GONEW is the name of the residence at the time (but with a (?) after it). It is a hamlet in Lelant, the name meaning High Downs. In "The Place-Names of West Penwith" by P.A.S. Pool the place was variously; Goeneu in 1364, Gonew Myseocke in 1556, Gonew in 1672, Gonew Vistow in 1740, Goneudisco in 1794, then Gonew Viscoe. Pool says the name is from the plural of gun (a down), gonyow (downs).
