THE BATH BOOK Bath, Pennsylvania Population: 3,500 6 September 1999
Bath, Pennsylvania, a small town just north of Allentown/Bethlehem where locals speak Pennsylvania Dutch and there are lot of balconies, was shut when we were there, it being Labor Day.
However, Betty the mayor was in, and she entertained us with hilarious stories of marrying locals. (Mayors in the US can marry.) The couple who had the best man as a dog, couples on motorbikes, the bride and groom who wanted to be hitched at 7am so they could enjoy the $20 pre-8am all-day special deal at the local amusement park for their honeymoon...
She's been mayor for 14 years, so is settling into the job quite nicely. On finding that I could spell 'necrotising fasciitis', she was so impressed she gave me a pen saying 'Betty for Mayor', which still works.
