You may not find Bath, West Virginia on your road atlas. Everyone calls it Berkeley Springs, due to Post Office regulations, and the supposed existence of a Bath in Virginia which confused the mailpersons. Good job no other places in the United States share a name, eh?

Whatever its name, Bath/Berkeley Springs is a gem of a town to visit, with cutesy antique and tea shops, a walkable town centre, friendly people and some real hot springs, bubbling up in the park out of their clean fine sand (above). We enjoyed a dip in the spring waters in the Roman Baths ('...built in 1850', as the guide told us with a straight face) and marvelled at George Washington's Bath Tub. Yes, it's here, filled constantly from the springs. Clearly Mr W was a small guy if the size of the tub is anything to go on.

We had a delightful lunch with the mayor, Susan Webster - many thanks to her and the rest of the people we met in this lovely little place. As John Denver sang, 'Take me home, country roads'. Good job he didn't ask directions from the local post office.
