If traditional Japanese temples and shrines turn your crank, Kyoto is a fine place to see them. The city is thick with the elegant simplicity Japan is famous for. As you wander through Kyoto's temples, shrines and gardens (see next page), you can almost forget that you're a short walk away from neon signs the size of the Vatican.
