Societies
This is not a definitive list! Many many more wine societies are listed in the Wine URLs at Davis University.There you will find societies of local growers and winemakers, marketing organisations and cooperatives and wine buff and tasting organisations that have long and colourful histories. However listed here are Australian and American societies with an academic focus, ones students and staff are likely to want to be in regular contact with.
- Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology
- An easily accessible site with ordering information for their conference proceedings and a history of the organisation.
They publish the Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research The calendar will be very useful to those with conference leave coming up. Their tenth conference is in August, 1998.
- Australian Society of Wine Education
- A very useful organistion and well organised site but it has not been recently maintained. It includes some chatty articles about wine and a history of the society, a tasting course they ran and of course membership details etc
- American Society of Oenlogy and Viticulture
- Loaded on to the Davis wine server, this over designed framed site is very hard to navigate and read. They produce the American Journal of Oenology and Viticulture so a link to that half page will return the editors details, a contact for subscriptions and advertising. They also list the publications available and it is possible to download a PDF order form. (Check our library holdings first before downloading or ordering at your own expense.)
- Society for Wine Educators -SWE
- This American society has very broad inclusive aims and draws together the many people involved in wine education, both formal and informal. The site has the usual components of a president's message, membership and board of directors details and is easy to view. The society has an annual conference, a newsletter and also runs overseas wine tours. The site is being rebuilt and may become more popular in it's focus.
