EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Mobil Oil Australia, 1987 to 1995
(subsidiary of Mobil Oil Corporation)

Employment has been centred on the energy and resource sectors. Particular job functions have all required high level analytical skills and have ranged through logistics, marketing, commercial trading and finance.

At a more personal level the job tasks have always required excellant communication and negotiation skills, astute interpersonal judgement and an ability to guide projects through often highly politicised environments.

Risk Management July 1992 to October 1995
Responsibilities:

  • Create the job function and responsibilities (as the first incumbent to the position).
  • Identify, develop and enact risk management strategies for US$1600 million annual crude oil and product purchases and sales.
  • Develop and enact risk management strategies to support Commercial Marketing of oil products.
  • Develop and provide analytical and strategic support to Traders engaged in purchase and sale negotiations.
  • Provide a Management Information System for the risk management programme.
  • Develop and provide risk management training and education programmes.

Highlighted Achievements:

  • Reduced the at-risk position of crude oil and oil products by US$250 million at a net cost of 1% by value.
  • Provided a net improvement of over US$5 million to Trading activities.
  • Provided a net improvement of over US$0.5 million to Commercial Marketing margins.
  • Provided a PC-based system of position and summary reports fully integrated with the Accounts and Trading systems.
  • Ran training and information sessions for senior management groups, trading and marketing personal and key commercial customers.
  • Consistently and highly regarded as a willing and valuable resource within Logistics Division and as a mentor for less experienced personal in the Trading and Analytical functions. A reputation was gained for innovative and practicable - though at times challenging - perspectives on organisational and operational issues.

Logistics and Refinery Analysis March 1989 to July 1992
Responsibilities:

  • Develop forward plans for Logistics and Refining operations to maximise income returns.
  • Optimise shipping, refining and supply arrangements to maximise income returns.
  • Provide analytical support for strategic investment planning in Logistics and Refining.
  • Provide analytical support for Crude Oil and Product Trading activities.

Highlighted Achievements:

  • Independently conceived and developed a Crude Oil Strategy that resulted in over 200 million litres of new-build tankage and anticipated income gains of tens of millions.

This project stretched to over 3 years and resulted in far-reaching and fundamental changes to Mobil and consequently the entire Australian oil industry. It bought together refining, oil trading and logistical knowledge. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to draw on the technical and political talents of others were crucial to the eventual acceptance of this strategy.

  • Successfully developed a Joint Venture with Shell Oil to redevelop a disused site owned by BP as a crude oil import terminal involving US$30 million investment. On the security given by this project Mobil Corporation released funds for US$1+ billion investment in the Altona Refining complex.
  • Developed an integrated plan for bitumen production involving US$5 million investment and US$4 million income improvement annually.
  • Independently conceived and developed a strategy to reduce gasoline lead levels below the maximum permitted. This concept was against outdated but conventional wisdom and resulted in savings of US$1.2 million annually.
  • Developed a Pacific Island Shipping Strategy that gave US$0.5 million income gains.

Refinery Scheduler September 1988 to March 1989
Responsibilities: Formulate and provide operating instructions for refinery product blending and pipeline offtakes to oil terminals, shipping and petrochemical plants.
