Infants & Toddlers

Carl Goes Shopping
Written by Alexandra Day

This book is about a dog, Carl, who is left in charge of the baby while the mother is shopping. It isn't a good thing to leave a baby with a dog, but this book is wonderful for little ones. The first page has a sentence and the last page has a sentence, all the pages in between are just pictures showing the adventures of Carl and baby when mom is away. I have this book in the Infant and Toddler section, but I've watched my four and five year old enjoy making their own story up to go along with the pictures. My two year old has been facinated with "Carl Books" for a year and a half. We started just naming the pictures, and now she is "reading" the book to herself. The illustrations are wonderful and the lack of words encourages creativity. There are several different "Carl" Titles, and I've seen them available in the traditional, pop up, and board book varieties. I of course opt for the board book version because they are so sturdy.

McBroom's Ghost
By Sid Fleischman, illustrated by Robert Frankenberg

A very cute story that tells what happens when a "ghost" inhabits a family farm. It tells what the "ghost" does and what Pa does to get rid of the ghost. You're in for a surprise ending though. The story keeps children entertained and the illustrations are an added bonus.

Robbie and Rebeka are twins that have a St. Bernard and they became ghosts fifty years ago. In this mystery they try to figure our what happened to Morty the Moose statue that was stolen from the town square fifty years ago.
This is one book of the continuing mystery series "Ghost Twins". You can find other mysteries to choose from that are equally fun.

Island of the Blue Dolphins
By Scott O'Dell

This book tells the story of survival for Karana, an Indian girl who lives alone on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. It tells how she waited year after year for a ship to come and take her away. She had to build her own shelter, find food, make weapons, and basically survive while she waited.
This is definately a tale worth reading.

I plan to add a highschool age group, but haven't completed my research on this age group.
