Friendship Star

Cutting:

4 – 4 ½” squares of background fabric  
2 – 5” squares of background fabric  
2 – 5” squares medium blue  
1 – 4 ½” square of medium blue  

 Sewing:

  Make half square triangle blocks

ü     Using the 5” background fabric and the 5” medium blue fabric make 4 half square triangles.  See instructions below.

ü     Trim sewn square to 4 ½”.

ü     You will have 4 half square triangle blocks.

 

  Sew block together

ü     Following the layout of the block above arrange your 9 - 4 ½” squares.

ü     Sew them together in rows then sew the rows together.

ü     Press.

ü     Check the size of the block. It should measure 12 ½”

 

  Tip for sewing blocks together

Press your seam so that the intersection of the half square triangle block  is visible. Sew through this intersection when sewing your rows together. This way your points will come out perfect!

                          

 

 

How to Make Half Square Triangle Blocks

1. Take one background square and one blue square and place right sides together.

2. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to another on the lightest square.

 

3. Sew ¼” away from drawn line on both sides of the line. Red is the stitching.

 

4. Cut the fabric apart on the drawn line.

5. Iron the seam towards the darkest fabric.

6. Trim squares to desired size by lining the 45 degree line on your ruler with the seam between the two fabrics.

 

7. Trim the right and top sides of your square. Rotate the square and trim the other two sides.

 

8. Two completed half square triangle blocks.
