Lemoyne Star Variation

 

Cutting:

4 - 4 7/8" light blue squares (background)
4 – 3 7/8” light blue squares (background)
4 – 7 ¼” x 3" dark blue rectangles
4 – 7 ¼" x 3" gold rectangles

  

Sewing:

Cutting Diamond Shapes from Rectangles   

1. With the dark blue rectangle place it on your cutting mat with right side up. Measure 3" over from the bottom left corner and place a mark. Measure 3" over from the right top corner and place a mark. Cut on the diagonal from the mark to the closest corner. Your rectangle should look like this.  

 

Throw away the triangles and keep the diamond.

2. With the gold fabric rectangle place it on your cutting mat with right side up. Measure 3" over from the top left corner and place a mark. Measure 3" over from the bottom right corner and place a mark. Cut on the diagonal from the mark to the closest corner. Your rectangle should look like this.

Throw away the triangles and keep the diamond.

 

Cutting Triangles from Background Squares

Take the small and large background squares and cut them on the diagonal to make 8 small and 8 large triangles. 

Sewing 1/4 of the Block Together

 

1.  Take one dark blue diamond, one small triangle and one large triangle. Lay them out like the picture below with the small triangle to the right of the diamond and the large triangle at the bottom of the diamond.

2. Take one gold diamond, one small triangle and one large triangle. Lay them out like the picture below with the small triangle to the bottom left of the diamond and the large triangle at the bottom right of the diamond.

3. Sew the large triangle to the blue and gold diamonds. Press the blue diamond seam towards the background fabric. Press the gold diamonds seam towards the gold fabric. Trim the excess background fabric from the long side of your shape.

4. Sew the small triangle to the blue and gold diamonds. Press the seam towards the background fabric.

 

5. Take one blue sewn triangle shape and one red sewn triangle shape. Sew the two long sides together matching up the seam where the blue and gold diamonds meet the background fabric. Press this seam open.

6. Trim the resulting square to 6 1/2". Make sure to keep 1/4" of background fabric at the points of your diamonds. 

 

7. Repeat steps one to six,  three more times. Sew the 4 - 6 1/2" squares together. Check that your block is 12 1/2" square.
