Making flying geese

There are many ways to make flying geese. I will show you my favorite way but you can check out the Marcia Hohn's  website for a couple of different ways.

http://www.quilterscache.com/G_I/Howtomakegeese.html

The finished size of each flying goose block is 3” x 6” and unfinished size is 3 ½” x 6 ½”. The cutting directions are to make the flying geese using the directions on this webpage. You are more than welcome to try out a different method, just be sure to cut the correct size of square/rectangles for the method you choose.

Note: the method I prefer is Marcia’s last set of directions (website above)

1. Taking the large 7 Ό” square with right side up place one dark blue
3 7/8” square (right side down) in one corner of the large square. Take another dark blue 3 7/8” square and place on the opposite corner (right side down).
I am using red 3 7/8" squares.

2. Draw a diagonal line starting at the corner of one small square and going to the opposite corner.

3. Sew a Ό” away from your drawn line on both sides of the line. Just like making half square triangle blocks.

4. Cut this block in half. Press towards small dark blue triangles (my triangles are red).

5. With the resulting block right side up, take one 3 7/8"dark blue square and place in the corner of the background triangle (right side down). Repeat with other block and dark blue square.

6. Draw a diagonal line from the corner of the dark blue square (between the two dark blue triangles) to the opposite corner.

7. Sew a Ό” away from the drawn line on both sides of the line.

8. Cut the block in half. Press towards the dark blue triangles.

9. Trim bunny ears from your rectangles using scissors.

10. You should now have 4 – 3 ½” x 6 ½” flying geese blocks.

Making center pinwheel

Refer to instructions in block 1 on how to make half square triangle blocks.

1. Using the 4” light blue and gold squares make 4 – 3 ½” half square triangle blocks

2. Referring to the block picture above sew two half square triangle blocks together. Repeat.

3. Press seam towards the gold fabric (green in my sample).

4. Sew these two half square triangle rectangles together matching the seam in the middle.

5. Press this seam open to reduce the bulk.

6. Square should measure 6 ½”.

Sew block together

ό     Following the layout of the block above arrange your squares.

ό     Sew them together.

ό     Press. You can press the seams open to reduce bulk if you wish.

ό     Check the size of the block. It should measure 12 ½”
