Variable Star


Cutting:

1 – 4 ¾” dark blue square
1 – 7 ¼” dark blue square
2 – 4” dark blue squares
2 – 4” gold squares
4– 3 7/8” gold squares
2 – 4” light blue squares

 Sewing:

Making flying geese

Using the 7 ¼” dark blue square and 4 – 3 7/8” gold squares make 4 flying geese rectangles using the directions from block #5

Half Square Triangles

Using the 2 – 4” light blue squares and 2 – 4” dark blue squares make 4 - 3 ½” half square triangle blocks. See directions from block #1 for instructions. 

Square In Square

This is the center part of the variable star block.

Take the 2 – 4” gold squares and cut them in half on the diagonal. You will now have 4 triangles.

Sew the triangles to the sides of the 4 ¾” dark blue square. See directions from block #3.

 

Sew block together

ü     Following the layout of the block above arrange your squares.

ü     Sew them together.

ü     Press. You can press the seams open to reduce bulk if you wish.

ü     Check the size of the block. It should measure 12 ½”
