Star Sampler - Block 3

 

Brasstown Star

Cutting:

4 – 4 ½” background squares
4 – 3” background squares cut in half diagonally
1 – 4 ½” dark blue squares
4 – 3” dark blue squares cut in half diagonally
4 - 3 3/8" medium blue squares

  Sewing:

  To make square in square block  

Take one dark blue triangle and line the long edge of the triangle up with the edge of the medium blue square. 

To center the triangle on the square, fold the square in half and finger press the fold. Unfold and line the point of the triangle up with the fold on the square. Sew.  

Take one background triangle and line the long edge of the triangle up with the opposite edge of the sewn medium blue square. Sew. 
  Press towards the triangles . Repeat the above steps to complete the square in square section.  
Trim to 4 ½” square.  

  Sew block together 

ü     Following the layout of the block above arrange your 9 – 4 ½” squares.

ü     Sew the blocks together into rows and press seams away from the square in square blocks.

ü     Sew rows together. Press.

ü     Check the size of the block. It should measure 12 ½”

 

Tip for sewing blocks together

Sew through the intersection the triangles make when sewn on the square in square block. This way your points will come out perfect!
