Prayer requires a certain vulnerability, or openness. Young adolescents often lack self-confidence and may be reluctant to share their thoughts and feelings with others The mood swings they experience, their need to conform, their fear of rejection, and their drive for independence challenge our efforts to awaken or deepen their spirituality, We have to accept them as they are, rather than expecting them to act or think or pray like adults. We need to recognize that what an adult might think is conducive to prayer-silence, solitude, quiet music-may come across to some young people as simply "boring".
On the other hand, young at this age are growing in spiritual awareness. They increasingly capable of reflection and meditiation. We can help them to develop their prayer skills and to become comgortable with a variety of prayer styles: silent, individual prayer as well as vocal, shared prayer.
