Communicating With God

There are many ways to communicate with God through prayer. Below are several types. Try using each type for one week. Find one that has great appeal to you and your needs, and use this type more often.

Formal Prayer
In this type, we use common prayers, such as the Our Father, Hail Mary, the Creed, etc. We say specific words and think about what we are saying.

Informal Prayer
When we make up our own prayer, we pray informally.

Journal Prayer
Some people find it a prayerful experience when they write about God in their lives. This usually takes a form similar to a diary as one's personal thoughts about a topic are put on paper.

Mantra
After getting into a relaxed and quiet postion, a person repeats a phrase, God's name (e.g., Jesus, Savior, etc.) or a single significant word for several minutes.

Scripture Reading and Discussion
Small groups get together, read a specific scriptural passage, and discuss the meaning. They try to get out of it a message for themselves.

Scripture Meditation
In this form of prayer, a person might read a gospel passage (e.g., a miracle story, parable, or event in the life of Jesus) and then recreate it in his/her mind. The individual might also try to relate to a specific person in that scene.

The Mass
The Mass is a prayer of many prayers. In it, there are prayers of thanks-giving, sorrow for sin, adoration, and petition.
