Lent-Easter

Lent is a time for renewing our baptismal commitment by preparing for Easter. The word lent comes from a word that means "springtime." During the forty days of Lent, we imitate nature, which slowly works its way back to new life. We work to strengthen the new life we received in Baptism. We work harder to give alms, or reach out to others. We fast and abstain, or "give things up," to remember that everything we have is a gift from God. We talk and listen more attentively to God in prayer.

The three days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the celebration of theEaster Vigil, are called the Easter Triduum. The word triduum means "three days." These days are the most important days of the Church's liturgical year. We celebrate and remember the Paschal mystery--the passion, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. We celebrate our own dying and rising to new life in Baptism.

Holy Thursday To celebrate the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper.

Good Friday To gather for the Celebration of the Lord's Passion.

Holy Saturday We gather for the celebration of the Easter Vigil.

Easter Season We rejoice in Christ's resurrection and in the hope of our own resurrection.

Advent - Christmas

The season of Advent begins the Church's liturgical year and lasts for four weeks. The word advent comes from two Latin words, ad and venire, meaning "coming to someone or someplace." It is a time to remember God's presence among us. We prepare for our remembering and celebrating the coming of the Messiah on Christmas. We prepare for the coming of Christ in glory at the end of time.

Christmas remembers and celebrates the birth of Jesus, the Word make flesh for the salvation of the whole world, Jews and Gentiles. The Christmas season lasts for three weeks, until the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the celebration of the beginning of Jesus' ministry, or work, among people.
