James was born in Greenville, CA, but was raised in Modesto, CA. He attended The Juilliard School, where he starred in such classics as "Twelfth Night" and "Troilus and Cressida." During his stay at Chicago, James worked at the Goodman Theatre for the production of ''Red Noses,'' and ''Tempest.'' James then worked at the American Conservatory Theatre in Seattle for productions of ''Handing Down the Names'' and ''Voices In the Dark.''
When James is not filming, he likes to play his guitar, singing, painting and writing. His character, Spike, appeared in season 2 as Buffy's new villian. Spike is a seasoned slayer killer, but his villiany is overshadowed when Angel becomes evil. Now, Spike is a "castrated" vampire due to a chip in his head and his feelings for Buffy are uncertain.
