Now it seams pretty official that he joins "Quills". From the NYPost:
JOAQUIN PHOENIX, just wrapping Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" movie, has nailed
a role opposite Geoffrey Rush and Kate Winslet in "Quill" for Fox/Searchlight.
This is based on Douglas Wright's Obie Award-winning play about the Marquis de Sade.
Joaquin will appear as a priest who engages in a battle of wills for the mind, soul and
body of Miss Winslet ...

what "Quills" is about - from Variety:
Rush, who won an Oscar for “Shine” and was Oscar nominated for “Shakespeare
in Love,” is near a deal to play de Sade, who at the start of the tale is confined in
an asylum, ostensibly for his pornographic writings. While wildly popular, they’re
deemed indecent and prompt his incarceration.
Winslet, Oscar nominated for “Titanic,” plays Madeleine, a maid who is de
Sade’s contact with the world and who helps get his feisty scribblings to the
populace. Phoenix is being wooed to play the role of an attractive young priest who runs
the asylum and engages in a
battle of wills with de Sade over the young girl.
Phoenix is agented by Iris Burton. The film will shoot
in Europe this summer.

NEW YORK (Variety) - Fox Searchlight is near deals with Kate Winslet and Geoffrey Rush
to star for director Philip Kaufman in "Quills,'' the story of the climactic days of
the Marquis de Sade. The studio is also in preliminary talks with Joaquin Phoenix for a
starring role. The film, based on the Douglas Wright play, is being produced by Industry
Entertainment's Julia Chasman and Nick Wechsler, with the director's son, Peter Kaufman.

pardon, Leaf`s first action experience in an episode of the television show "7 Brides
