Thank god, I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE !, whose had their depression corrected by methadone. For years I argued with my counselors over methadone correcting my depression. They'd throw the PDR at me "methadone has no psychological effect.." For some reason the subject angered them. They weren't even happy for me! I have been depressed all my life and have been put on various drugs...all to no avail. When I entered a MMTP(for other reasons, obviously) POOF! my depression was gone/corrected. Totally unexpected and truly a miracle. I came alive. I got a career... Now that I am off methadone my depression is back (and it's 100 times worse) :o( I'm looking to get back on methadone via prescription but am at a loss. Are there any Doctors/organizations/individuals in the USA sympathetic to the methadone-depression phenomenon? Thank you for putting this site up. I sent your methadone & depression page to everyone I'd ever mentioned that methadone was the only thing that cured my depression. Proof , I finally had some proof. Thanks again

Hi, I've written before. I was reading "mystory" and saw that you took something called Doloxene, which supposedly helps with withdrawal... I am intersted in treatments that help addicts kick. What can you tell me about this drug? Is there another name for it (generic) ? I believe the next wave of addiction treatments will make withdrawal almost painless, yet will not themselves be addictive (like methadone, which I am currently on). I desperately need to get off my methadone clinic; I just don't like the way it makes me feel, and it's incredibly inconvenient. They took away my hard-earned takehome for using just ONCE. and I had to start all over. It's just impossible. I hear it's much more humane in Australia. Anyway what can you tell me about Doloxene? Thanx, very good job on the web site. -Liz

Thank you so much for this page. I think it is a great idea. Although I have never been addicted or used heroin, my older sister struggled with heroin for 6 years of her life and she has always felt like an outcast. I am going to tell her about this pagebecause I think it is great. We are all people and we all have our problems. We need to be viewed as equals. Thanks Again!!!!

Been a long time since I came here. Still can't stop but TRYING and HOPING. Read and re-read the piece about stopping the H. Very useful and encouraging. You're right; knowing what to expect helps A LOT. Taking heart with Rose's observation that you have to make many attempts, and then some "before finding a way that suits you." I'm learning (and suffering) with each and every attempt to quit (cold turkey). During my next try, I'll remember what you said. I WILL MAKE IT!

Boy, if we were all this brave and eloquent, the public would have a much better image of us! Keep up the outreach. I work a similar site - a newsletter for my clinic which I put online also. When you say "try to find a doctor" who is open to the possibility, maybe you have some advice for how to broach the subject. Most Drs. think it's illegal to do this, or they need a "special license"... actually we need some specific input from those who have a prescribing physician -- how they approached the doctor, and HOW THEY FOUND him/her (word of mouth, random chance, another addict, Internet). I guess we should also thank Geocities for hosting a broad spectrum of viewpoints. Sometimes if it weren't for the Internet, I'd feel very alone. BottomzUp

Great page, I wish more people would wake up. I was strung for 25 years, ended up on methadone, started getting sick from it, found out I was infected with Hepatitis B&C, Biopsy showed liver damage from methadone the only drug I took for 10 years, I devel ped an alergy to the methadone, had to be switched to morphine, which has no bad sides. The methadone was doing more damage to my liver then the Hep virus was. I did not know this until I was waking up at 3am sick every morning. My body was seeing the met as an alergy attack and was producing eosonaphillia jaming portal triads in the liver. Other then that the methadone saved my life many times over. I just started with the morphine slow release, but as my days are short, I needed sompthing better then methadone, if you know what I mean. Keep up the good work and feel free to write if you have any questions. Later Larry.

I am in love with a woman currently enrolled in a Methadone program. She is in a co-dependent relationship with a man with whom she has lived with for ten years. She often tells me that she wants to get out of her present relationship and be with me, typically after a night of getting high on cocaine. I've been supporting her (and the guy she's living with) for the last eight months. She recently confessed to me that she's still doing drugs, using the money I've given her for support. I do not know what to do. I am really in love with her and want her to live a good life and that is why I support her. But, I'm hurt and upset that she takes the money I give her, to support the man she's living with and to buy drugs for the two of them. What should I do?

This is a great page...especially since it relates to Australia. I am currently helping a close friend come off methadone and I confess at times it is not easy. But this page has given me some of the info that the US pages did not provide in an easy to read format. It was also great to be able to print off the stories of other people to show my friend that it can be done. I am so proud of him as he has come from a $200 day heroin/morphine habit to 12.5mg of methadone a day in just over 8 months and is planning to come off in the next 3 weeks. Thanks for the contact numbers, doctors always look at me suspiciously when I ask them questions 'for a friend who is on the methadone program' and it gets annoying. So anyway keep up the good work, and to all those out there trying to get/stay clean best wishes and those who are supporting them..stay strong..

Ronny - Malaysia I'm back. Tried to get off again and it lasted for two days before crawling like a mad man to end the misery. But, the pain is getting less and I will try to go the cold turkey way again in a few more days when I have the courage. Right now, just taking the bare minimum to "keep the Jonses away." Will keep you all in touch with developments. How I crave the chance to try Methadone during the minutes and hours of pain! But if I succeed, maybe I should be awarded the "Cold Turkey Warrior Award" :-) After all I'm using the high-grade H from Thailand. Just mixing with water and it dissolves. However, the purer it is, the harsher the withdrawal. I'll be back.

ronworm@hotmail.com - Great effort! I'm one of you too. Started in 1976 when I was 16. Clean in1981 to 1993. 12 years! And what did I do? With a good job, a wife and four kids, I relapsed. Would you believe this? Now I've lost almost everything. Kicked out of three well-paying and respectable jobs and now living on sympathy. Yes, I know I'm a bastard. Sometimes wish I'm dead due to the sins I've made and the problems brought onto the innocent - my wife and children. We don't have a methadone programme here (Malaysia) So, you'll have to go cold turkey yourself. Either this, or wait to be arrested by the cops for a urine test (plus 14 days in a lock-up while waiting for results). Then be sent to a rehab centre (where you march around for most of the day) for two years. Hope I'll find the strength to do the cold turkey thing. Or, can any kind soul sent me some methadone for a week's supply? I really need to get my life back in order. With cold turkey, at most I can stand two days before almost literally going on hands and knees to the dealer's house.

Good too see a Methadone site, with all the relevant fact's and imformation from both side's of the coin.I myself have been a herion addict since a trip too Thailand at the age of 12 on and off for the last 12 year's now I have been on Methadone, jumped off then used a truck load and well I am back on Done again it's a vicious circle I supose.I too have had bad responses too people discovering that I am on Methadone,at the clinic in Perth W.A "where I live" the local shop retailer's even wrote to paper's ect complaining about Methadone frak's poluting there sacred store's.But too be honest I left the clinic because of the type of people who I had to run into there. When I first went too the chemist that we dose at daily, they were polite but sort of frosty, when we paid by cheque we could see the reluctance in there forced smile's and panicked eye's. Now they buy usChristmas, Easter ,Valentine's present's and say they can't believe we are on Methadone, and what nice people we are.At first we felt affronted by this attitude as we feel that addiction is a disease like cancer that can and dose affect all and any that get in it's path. And all people who fall prey too the ravage's of herion and who make that life affecting descision to go on Methadone deserve to be treated with respect and politness. But since then I have seen other Methadone customer's who don't pay for there dose, shop ift and are dirty and disheveled and who's pathetic attempt's at decieving and lying are laughable and embarrassing,so much so that I have left the chemist on a number of occassion's so as too distance myself in the eye's of the other customer's in the store , who would see me dosing and think of me in the same term's as these other individual's. And I don't feel ashamed about this,I feel mad that I should have to be put in the same social group as these pathetic wretch's who as well as having a drug problem, seem to have no self respect for them selve's or other's. You see,I dress well and shave every day ,take care in my appearance and am well, not exactly proud of being on methadone,I am not really ashamed either, but I now see the aforementioned shop owner's point of view, face it when people are "resting" in the middle of the day,in public and have trouble keeping there eye's open and sluring there speech, they are usually stoned. And for the common public and store owner's this is bad for buisness and offensive so when asked to either leave or to show some common respect,by not swearing ,spitting, nodding, stealing ect they jump up and in that whinning pitchy voice that seem's to prevail as a trade mark ,like track mark's,among the junkie scene, that they are being victimised for being on methadone. Yes maybe you are victimised some time's but when you see how you are being represented,is it suprising? I think people should get over being on Methadone and accept the pitfall's of societie's view of Methadone treatment and start setting example's that not all opiate user's are no hoper's ect ect. I could go, on and on about Methadone and my view's of what is lacking in the system and I have clashed with the head's of the clinic before on there confusing and changing policie's regarding take away's for one and urine test's ect ect. But it is late, and I am very tired and I am making too many spelling mistake's and punctuation error's,but I would really like to see a Methadone chat house or IRC set up,where we could bounce about ,idea's and problem's theory ect

I was very impressed with your story, in fact I am siting your story and cartoon in a paper that I am doing in my Sociology class, here at East Tennessee State Univ. I myself experimented with Heroin, very briefly, last summer. Alot of people don't realize what a powerful thing that Heroin is. It seems as though, especially where I'm from that people are very quick to judge someone with any kind of drug addiction as "trash, that needs to be locked away forever", they don't understand that locking a problem up for a few years will not make the problem disappear...Although,I never got into "it", as deep as some of the people that I know, I definately understand the effects of it, on the user, and everyone around that person..Feel free to e-mail if you wish...Loves and Kisses, Andrea

It is indeed very difficult for those "un-initiated" to appreciate the prblems that addicts must face once they are - addicted. I work in the field, used to arrest addicts for "possession" and other offences such as "supply", but have now turned to researching the problem. However, I still find it offensive that people even get hooked in the first place. Bare with me - consider the volume of information that is available to the "public" on the negative side effects of some drugs, most have access to this information, and indeed, most of it is common knowledge (I'm sure that there will be those who disagree with me here...). I can extend a little lattitude to the ever inquisitive characteristic of youth, but cannot to those who should know better. Clearly, prevention must be more appropriate than treating the symptom. You know what I'd like to see - a little less self pitty, and more energy devoted (by those who are the so called victims) to preventing future instances of addiction when they ought to know who, how and where and that they shouldn't. On the other hand, I also support a greater emphasis being placed on giving support to those who have had to contend with a parochial and often damning attitude from those who should also know better. This is a very complex and difficult issue to explain away simply by saying that we need more support for addicts, more methadone programs, etc. We do need to have the extreme views to create a balance for informed debate. To respond to the comment that the ad icts are on the periphery while the so called experts are formulating policy etc: it is very difficult to obtain an informed opinion from one who is not impartial to one side or the other ie. an addict who wants to develop policy for other drug addicts, oh please! While offering some practical insight in to the world of the addict, we must often expect no more than that. Although some addicts are well educated, hold positions of trust and, above all else, are "normal", upstanding members of the community - aren't we all!? The addict will never be recognised as being an equal in the community - an analogy might be to say that you and I will be living next door to our indeginous neighbours and having BBQs within, say, the next five years - yeah right! My point is this, methadone, clearly, does not work for everybody. I beleive that not one strategy ever will! We need to continue the search for preventive measures that can help those who might be exposed to the pre-conditions that invade our lives everyday like stress and whatever other excuse is offerred for why the bloody stuff was injected in the first place! Bye the way, I enjoyed the site, but find it a little too "hey were being ostracised and we're not respected as a class of people" - maybe so, but the reasons why are, sometimes, quite clear - to me.

Hey really liked what you have together here. I'm much the same 39/22 heroin of which last 3 'Done. Was on 80 to 90 until 8 months ago, & now slowly am down to 4. Perhaps 3.5 in the morning. You mention the Methadone mailer or something similar, could you forward me some info. Just got on line 2 weeks ago & now have ICQ. No.8624750 Wouldn't mind some help in contacts as I am in South Coast NSW. Having gotten away from what I thought were the regimes of Canberra I now know how lucky I was, even tho' they (Canberra) can be just as fucking as made as that place in Gloucester. Now I see the doc when I want, no urines, & I've had about 3 tastes in the last 8 months. That's what supervision & all that bullshit can do. AS you can see I like a rave, especially at night!! Dug the pages Mamen

I love Your pages..I`ve been using opiates since 4 yrs of age due to a series of eye operations. At about age 10 the dok. stopped them to prevent addiction ?!? A bit late, but that was fifty odd yrs. ago.A lifetime of serious migraine seizure, being treated like dirt trying to just not hurt.. I`m now on methadone, clean, but hassled to death by the unreal restrictions in the u.s. Really wanting to see an end to this bullshit ``war on drugs`` the u.s. govt. has stuck to the world. Its no wonder anti-american sentiment is so heavy everywhere. END THE WAR ON DRUGS!! Rose withers, I also love the way You think and write.. keep up the good work. best regards, Larry T.-

My daughter is addicted to heroin and I have lived this with her for 3 years. She is only 20 years old. I am trying to understand and she is trying to kick. There is an appalling lack of sensitivity to addicts and their families, and no one seems to really know what to do or how to handle the problem. More love and compassion from the medical community is a vote on my part. Keep up this page, it was a breath of fresh air for me. Sunshine

Please visit us at http://www.drugaid.com.au. We are an Australian organisation DrugAid. I am the mother of a son who died from a heroin overdose (he had a little valium on board and a powerful antidepressant Deptran which combined with the heroin and killed him) on Valentine's day this year. (1997) Guy suffered dehumanising treatment and his family were demonised and called enablers in a non too subtle attempt to control us if we sucumbed to Guy's desperate screams for help as we watched him wither and die in front of us. He had also been on Methadone but it did not suit him and he nearly died on it. When we contacted the Methadone clinic they would not listen to us. If they had, Guy may well have been alive today. Parents and friends have gathered together through DrugAid to denounce the disgraceful treatment of drug dependent people which amounts to nothing less than mental and physical incarciration and abuse of persons already compromised by their drug dependency. We want to see decriminalisation and legalisation of illicit drugs and wide ranging chocie of treatments put back in the hands of Doctors, with patient choice and human rights restored and respected. We are not going to stand by and watch internaational laws of countries be allowed to persecute, control and kill our kids, Parents and friends of Drug Dependent people have united all over Australia and other countries to stand up against political and professional bureaucrats whose power hunger and misplaced, dangerous moralisation is persecuting our kids and family members and allowing them - in fact forcing them - to die. If they live and are not jailed it is a miracle given the ludicrous, malicious and draconian laws and treatment they are forced to suffer in the name of law and order. This is not justice. Our laws are perpetrating torture. DrugAid's charter is to save and restore lives harmed by drug dependency. We cover a whole range of issues from law reform (we are taking the law apart bit by bit and we will probably achieve the changes we seek as we discover more and more human rights abuse) treatments - including heroin which has been demonised beyond belief. Heron is one of the indicated stabilisation treatments for the central nervous system disorder of opiate addiction when quality contolled appropriate dosage is adhered to and not mixed with other substances such as benzos, bariturates or alcolhol. Lobbying, police, medical profession, politics, 24 hour help lines for families and friends of drug dependent persons, (we do not advocate abstinence but stabilisation - only when the DDP is ready to give up or abstain do we look at UROD or other detoxification methods which are humane.and considerate. We are giving families and friends of DDP's a voice - as our drug dependent family members have literally had their voices castrated by cruel politics and a misinformed, loathing society. We are going to give back voice to our Drug Dependent persons. To all of you who have suffered societies cruelties because of drug dependency, we apologise for the ignorance and these cruelties. DrugAid salutes you. Thank you for this site. We will link it to ours and do everything in our power to support you.

Hi...My name is Rokki and I'm a methadone patient here in Santa Cruz,CA. When I 1st came to this Clinic I spotted some things that were Not Quite Right. Like the Dispensing Nurse was always Loaded,The Book-keeper was taking Money from Medi-cal Patients, which is Illegal here. Well, that was in April of this Yr. It's Now December and the Nurse is GONE. The Folks thhat were extorting Money from Patients are also Gone. That is all because i started making Phone calls. Calls to the State and reporting things. My Program has some good Qualities, but now it's even better. I will pat myself on the back,as well as the other Patients, who were Brave enuff to call the State and Medi-cal and the DEA. So,It's Like Joycelyn Woods says"Together We CAN make a difference and Together WE can Make a CHANGE" Thanks for Listening...I Love this Web Page and will be back to visit again SOON...:) Rokki RBaker9962@aol.com

I am probably not the only one writing to you who has been an ex-junkie for many years. It is good to see someone who shares there experiences with others. With all of the literature out there no one can explain what it means to be an addict unless they have been through it. I have been clean for a few years and it is not easy! However if I don't stay clean I know for a fact I will be doomed! I have a poem I have written and I will email it to you shortly it has some humor. And it is right to the point.

This is the best web page about Heroin I have found. I am an addict myself, and am considering different treatments. Most information presented is usually very dry, and written by someone who is from a medical background, not a using one. This was clearly written by someone who understands the struggle. The lady who has set this up is doing a wonderful service to users.

Visit my site to hear about another worthless addict who made it threw several decades of drugs ,jail and the whole thing. We are people who contribute to society if we can get the help and courage we need to fight this awful disease. The sad thing I have found in rehab is "most" all addicts are great people with a good sence of humor who have a tough way to go.I found peace thru Christ. If people could only walk in our shoes for a month they may feel a little different, but thats life.GOD BLESS ALL!

I've been a heroin addict for about 6 months. Since I began using, my life has, essentially, turned to garbage. I'm an intelligent young woman, once fueled by a motivation to be a self-employed web design mogul. Now, my only goal is to "get well" every day. I'm about to lose the best job I've ever had. I've been asked to remove myself from my place of residence (not because of the drugs - my roommate is unaware - but it's another factor in my desire to use). My boyfriend can't stand the fact that I'm addicted, and he's nearing the limit of his patience with me. He'll likely be ending our relationship before much longer. All of my alleged "friends" who introduced me to the drug are nowhere to be found when I want to try to kick. I've been in one Detox facility that offered no relief from withdrawal except hot tea. So I left. Now I'm just trying to survive. I apologize if my entry has a rambling feel to it. I've had an immensely bad day, and I'm feeling hopeless, and, yes, even suicidal. Very alone. It was nice to find this page instead of the usual clinical documents that Yahoo pulls up. I won't have internet access for much longer, but I'll try to make it back here before I get canned on the 31st (Happy Halloween). Guess I just wanted to say that I used to be someone you might be proud to know. Now I can't even stand myself. I've pretty much written myself off, but I hope that people out there will stop treating addicts like pieces of crap. Maybe someone else in my situation will be offered some help instead of ending up in a situation similar to mine.

Heroin has become a lethal and dangerous drug . I feel no one should ever look at it as cool or a quick high. The "high" is not worth it. I respect those who have overcome their addiction and are able to tell thier story. I'm just sorry that they became involved with this killer in the first place.
