My story, Part 1. Coping with Depression
After being clean for several years I was diagnosed first with depression and then with manic depression. I started taking heroin and methadone again as these were the only drugs I found that relieved my depression.- My story, Part 2. Ancient History
My experiences from childhood, early drug use, treatment and detox history, to starting a family. My story, Part 3. Coping with the system
Victoria, Australia has very restrictive methadone regulations. After 18 months on methadone I still have to collect my methadone from the pharmacy every day. I'm sure you can imagine the havoc this plays with a busy lifestyle (2 children under 5, full time study and part-time work). It seems that the more successful and active a methadone user gets, the heavier the yoke becomes.Mandy's Story
In many ways a typical story of someone becoming addicted to opiates, but Mandy is anything but a stereotypical junkie. A well educated, high achieving career woman for whom life will never be the same. Includes a poem about heroin and being sickAnnette's Story
Annette shares with us a brief account of how opiates have affected her life. The Wardrobe
A semi-autobiographical short story.So This is 'Treatment'?
Nick Stafford recounts his own experiences of methadone maintenance. An interesting and original viewpoint of methadone treatment.Your Story Could be Here!
The more we tell each other about ourselves and let it be known that we are humans too the more good can be done. Sharing personal experiences is a great way of achieving understanding, reaching out to others, making all of us a little less isolated. Treatments for Heroin Addiction
General overview touching on issues about the difference between drug use and addiction, stereotyping addicts, different treatment types, treatment availability, discrimination against people seeking treatment and whatever else comes into my head.Heroin Maintenance
Heroin trials have received widespread support in Australia, but the conservative government doesn't have the guts to go ahead with it. Switzerland is now well into the first large scale, systematic program to really allow addicts to choose how they want to live. The early results are very promising and, despite sending the 'no drugs for anyone for any reason' fanatics into apoplexy, this program has received widespread support from the Swiss public. This page attempts to sort out some of the arguments and gives links to current research.Back to Short List Index of Medical Articles

Life After Heroin: The Attempt to Stay Clean
Advice on staying clean after withdrawal. A person e-mailed me saying that he'd just stopped taking methadone and was having trouble staying clean, could I give him some advice. That was all the information I had to go on. This was my reply and I figured that the advice in it could well apply to anyone. I do get asked for this sort of advice frequently. Different things work for different people, so it is by no means the last word on abstinence strategies, but these are the things that I consider to have been important in my own recovery.Back to Short List

The guestbook has become so big that it has grown to five pages. The pages are numbered earliest first. From Archive 1 the first entry, which disappointed me terribly and made me wonder if I was going to be able to get through to anyone, to messages which have been so hopeful and beautiful that they still give me a lift when I read them over.

Anything useful I could think of about methadone treatment, including: advantages of methadone treatment, disadvantages of methadone treatment, when is a treatment successful?, Methadone services, What to do if you want to go on a methadone program?, Information Links, Methadone Cartoon. The world's WORST methadone clinic
Well, perhaps not really the worst because as bad as this story sounds I have heard, unfortunately, others just as bad and even worse. It is, however an enlightening example of just how much power doctors and clinics have over methadone patients and the inhumane way in which some unscrupulous (or just disinterested) "carers" wield it. This is a first hand account of one woman's refusal to bow to injustice, even when threatened with dire consequences.More than Methadone
The opposite of the horror story above. A positive story of client-centred service. Cooper's Cottage in Sydney, Australia, works with clients to help with basic needs, such as parenting skills, as well as providing methadone. Reproduced with permission from CEIDA's Connexions magazine.Methadone patients dicussing stereotypes, stigma and "coming out"
A series of excerpts from the Methadone Mailing List (for information on how to access this mailing list see the entry on the WWWLinks page) with some poignant thoughts of what it feels like to be a methadone patient among strangers. How will they react? Should you just keep your mouth shut when the unsuspecting person you are having a casual conversation with mentions that all methadone patients are just sleazy junkies bludging off the system?Just Wait Here A cartoon for children about methadone.
How do you tell your children you're on methadone? What do they think you are doing at the clinic? There is plenty of information forced upon children via 'Just Say No' style campaigns, but no information at all for children about methadone. This is a simple introduction to the subject targeted specifically to the children of methadone patients.
