Landmark Tower At the time the Landmark Tower was built in 1993, it was the tallest building in Southeast Asia. Two buildings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia have since surpassed it; but it is still the tallest building in Japan. It is 290m (970ft) tall with 70 floors. The first 50 are commercial with the bottom 5 being part of a mall. From 50th floor to the 68th is a hotel, the 69th a observation floor and the 70th a meeting place. I found this out the second day I was there. When I was driving into the city I thought to myself: "I want to go to that building at least once while I'm here." Little did I know I would go there many more times than that. On the second day I was there, I had to give a speech to the Rotary club that was hosting me. They met in top of the Landmark Tower. It was an experience that I won't soon forget. Some other facts about the tower are that it has the fastest elevators in the world. It takes only 48 seconds to travel from the ground floor to the top. The other neat feature that the public cannot see is the two steel balls in the top. They are there in case of an earthquake or strong winds. They swing back and forth to keep the building balanced thus not allowing it to fall over. |
