Su's been really hardworking
doing all the possible research on Chinchillas. You know those cute animals that look like
overgrown hamsters with squirrel's tails?! yups! that's the one. They are also know as
"long mao" in mandarin or translation to English as:" Dragon Cat". If
you have seen pokemon before; the character "pikachu" is based on the
chinchillas! =) We have been eyeing one of those as a pet since we first saw it at Pet
Safari over at East Point Shopping Centre!
They've got the most gorgeous
fur that's softer then anything I have even touched before! We got the cage, the saw dust,
it's bathing dust, it's food ( alfalfal hay cubes and fruit and nut treats ) and
also it's feeder tray and drinking bottle, a day before we got the chinchilla. (
Must prepare it's home 1st mah! )
Su and I went down to the
breeder's place and we were really pleasantly surprised to see a room full of chins! He's
got like 20 chinchillas!! A few in a cage.. those that he's trying to mate, he pair them
up; those with their youngs.. they are kept together with the mother. We got
Adam..... a young male standard grey chinchilla . he is only four and a half months old!
Chatted with the breeder for like almost two hours before we bear to leave the chinchilla
paradise.
Adam's a healthy bundle of joy
when we got him back to Su's place that night! [13th june 2000] Yupz! He was so
inquisitive that he kept hopping up and down in the cage.. su got a few ledges fixed
up for him to jump around and also a swing-like structure for it to rest on when he feels
like getting to higher grounds. We got him a pine wood hut to be placed on the floor for
him to retire into when he's sleepy. It's a known fact that Chinchillas are usually quite
shy on the 1st day at their new place.. on the contrary, he's not at all like that, and we
were really deligghted to have such an active chin!
All three of us were really
very excited over the cute little thing and kept pampering him with treats and dust bath
soon after he arrived. We got a clear biscuit container and poured the dust in before
putting the whole container into his cage. He got in and started clawing at the dust and
tumbling and rolling in the dust! Really very cute! He did that like four times before he
was willing to return to his wooden hut. We took the container out and tried to woo him
out of the cage to play with him.
However, the little fella got
an attitude bigger then the size of his cage! he pretended to be shy and played hide and
seek with us for the next few days. Once, he pee-ed onto the blades of a fan which was
supposed to keep him cool during the day! [ we switch on the airconditioning at night
too.. you see.. chins come from the temperate regions and they cannot be overheated.. so
we have to find ways and means to cool them.] The yellow fluid dripped all over the
place and Liling ( su's younger sis ) has to clear it up! He overturned his food
tray and refused to get out of his cage !He don't like to eat from the food container and
rather eat only when one of us feeds him with our hands! Got really worried when he
didn't touch the water bottle for H20.. *sigh* that little rascal just had a big attitude
problem. we hope to tame it soon though.. hee hee.. he's rather meek when handled, and he
loves it when we tickle his chin or stroke his fur. Guess that he's still very young
and the responsibility to train him will have to be ours.. we try not to pamper him too
much!
I kind of thought about getting
a female chin to accompany him in the near future.. see if that's possible.. my mum kind
of don't like that idea of me keeping another pet after my pet terapins... we'll see about
that!
