Book Reviews

Now that summer is here and kids are out of school, reading becomes more important.
Why?
Because it's so easy to just say..."GO OUTSIDE!"
Encourage reading! How much? As much as possible!
For the infant/toddlers' group, give them as much as they want and as much as is possible with your schedule. You'll probably want to stop before they do.
For the preschool-first grade and the 2nd-4th grade groups, at least a half hour a day. If they want to do more then great!
5th-8th grade and older, No less than an hour a day. You'll find that they will start to get absorbed in some books and not stop at one hour.
A set time to read isn't a bad idea either. Try the time period after dinner. I think this tends to be better than the last minute, before I go to bed, so I get to stay up longer time period.
Most importantly, have fun with reading!

Cuddles' Bedtime
Compiled by Lisa Marin and Micheline Bertrand

Cuddles is a bear. This book has very short and simple sentences. This book goes through the bed time routine. The illustrations are big and simplistic also. They show a variety of objects that kids this age can identify. The pictures use only the primary colors, so you can even practice color identification. This is also one of those great, sturdy board books that comes in several "themes".

The Fire Cat
By Esther Averill

This book is about Pickles. Pickles wasn't always a fire cat. The story tells how Pickles became a fire cat. It also goes into Pickle's heroics. Amazingly enough, Pickles also bears an uncanny resemblance to a dalmation dog, although Pickles is yellow and black. This is a book that I have yet to find a kid that didn't enjoy it.

Meet Samantha
By Susan S. Adler, illustrations by Nancy Niles

Meet Samantha is part of the American Girl book collection. Set in 1904 it tells the story of Samantha Parkington who is an orphan that lives with her rich grandmother. The story begins with there not being anyone for Samantha to play with. Then luckily Nellie moves in next door. Nellie has a much different life than Samantha. Nellie has to work and send money to her family. Despite their differences they become great friends and embark on a secret adventure to find out why Jessie, the seamstress, is leaving since no one will tell them why.
All of the American Girl books make great reading selections. You can choose from four different time periods. Felicity, a colonial girl, all of the books about Felicity are set in 1774.
Kirstin is a pioneer girl, whose books are set in 1854. The "Samantha books" are Set in 1904.
Last, there is Molly, and her books revolve around the World War II time period in 1944.

The Magicians's Nephew
By C.S. Lewis

Digory and Polly meet and become friends. Digory's Uncle Andrew thinks he's a magician and ends up sending them on an adventure somewhere else. They find themselves in a place called Narnia where they encounter the evil sorceress Jadis.
This is the first book in "The Chronical of Narnia". The most popular is probably "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", but all of the books are well worth reading.

I plan to add a highschool age group, but haven't completed my research on this age group.
