Harmony Masonic Lodge No.22 A.F.M. News Letter for month of March 2003

Brethren,

I am pleased to announce that our newsletter is up and running and will be sent out monthly or when there is a need to send a message in between meetings. This will allow you to keep up on the happenings of your lodge.

We are in the process of getting a Fellow Craft ready for his Master Mason Degree, the date and time are not yet set. The past master of Harmony #22 will put on this Degree, if you are a past master and wish to assist with the Degree Work please contact WB Chuck Weickhardt or myself. We are planning to do this Degree work on the first floor of the lodge so all can attend.

When the time comes for this special occasion we will let you know through the newsletter.

Also, we will be attaching a calendar, which will list the meeting dates and times of all lodges in the Fourth Masonic District, dates of Blood drives, Degree Work, and other special events.

Rick A. Krob, Wor.Master

From your Secretary

Henry Luarens March 6, 1724 - December 8, 1792 Charleston, South Carolina

Ashes interred on his estate "Mepkin"

Bro. Laurens received his early education in Charleston, SC before leaving for England to further his education in 1744. He returned to Charleston in 1747 and established a successful business there

Bro. Laurens was a member of Solomon's Lodge #1, Charleston, SC where he served as Treasurer during 1755. Prior to being elected Treasurer he had served as Provincial Grand Steward during 1754.

It was at the first Masonic meeting ever to publish a meeting notice (in South Carolina) that Bro. Laurens was elected Treasurer of Solomon's Lodge#1. This meeting was called 'By order of the Grand Master' and the following notice was published:

'The Grand Annual Feast and General Communication of the Free and Accepted Masons, is to be holden in Charleston, on Friday, the 27th of December, instant, being St.John the Evangelist's Day.'

This notice was issued by order of the Hon. Peter Leigh who had constituted a Provincial Grand Lodge the year prior.

Bro. Henry Laurens served in the South Caroline State Legislature from 1757-1777 and was a member of the American Philosophical Society 1772-1792.

Brother Laurens was a member of the Continental Congress and served as it's President from November of 1777 to December 1778. He was elected Minister to Holland in October 1779. While on a voyage to Holland during 1780 he was captured and held prisoner in the Tower of London until his release December 31, 1781. His release was in exchange for Lord Conwallis. Upon his release, Bro Henry Laurens was appointed one of the peace commissioners and signed the preliminary Treaty of Paris in 1782.

Bro. Laurens retired to his beloved Charleston, SC plantation, "Mepkin" in 1784.
