Karin's Story

I was diagnosed with lupus, finally, in the late seventies after many years of being plagued with mysterious symptoms and illnesses. Some of these were recurring pleurisy, uterine tract infections, many kidney and bladder infections. Eventually I found a family doctor who happened to be an expert diagnostician. He suspected lupus immediately and sent me to a rheumotologist and a dermatologist. I had never even heard of the disease!! One doctor sent me to the library to read about it because he felt so inadequate in trying to explain it. I came home from that excursion convinced that I was going to die simply because the info I read was so outdated and offered me little insight and no hope. My family doctor put me in touch with the Lupus Society which soothed my fears at once.

The most difficult things for me to deal with are the misperceptions and attitudes of other people. Before I developed massive discoid lesions I did not appear to be ill. Family and co-workers accused me of being hypochondriac, lazy, whiny and yes, even crazy! With the development of the lesions, which are quite extensive and never under control people started backing away from me. Now they knew I was sick but wanted no part of me - they might catch something!!
