Frustrated by Frames?
Whether you like them or not, framed pages are being used more often at many sites. Personally, I feel frames offer one of the best solution to have dynamic pages and increased flexibility in a web page.
Many people do not like frames for various reasons. The main problem I have is the necessity to advertise for my host GeoCities on every page, no matter how small! With that said, I still appreciate their support to have this space. Thanks GeoCities Gods!
Here are a few of the more common complaints I've read: - PROBLEM: The location isn't saved in my history
- Solution: You can quickly move forward and back with either the browser backward/forward buttons or use ALT-(Left/Right Arrows) keys.
- PROBLEM: It takes too long to see the page
- Solution: Longer load time is compensated with enhance navigation to the rest of the site, and flexibility in it's presentation.
- PROBLEM: Other peoples pages are inside your page
- This is true. But the difference in page styles, usually let's the viewer know they are looking at somewhere else.
Solution: To avoid this, program the page to be on top or in a new window. My reason for framing a window is NOT to make it look like part of my site, but to keep access to menus, while viewing other sites. - PROBLEM: I can't see everything
- Solution: Increase your screen resolution or get a better webpage programmer.
When viewing a Frame-Style site, you get better functionality at higher resolutions. I normally run at 800 X 600 pixels or higher. At these higher resolutions, you can see most pages completely in the main viewing window, while still keeping the menu features available. At normal VGA resolution, I find most frame-type pages to be more of a hinderance than a help. You are constantly having to scroll the viewing area left/right, as well as up/down, to see all of the information on the page.
I feel the best use of frames are as aids in navigating a site.
There are 3 different frame-style interfaces at Interloper's for you to view site information. Click on the links in the sidebar, or below, to try them. Then you decide whether you like framed pages.
The first was designed to allow access to my links, music, and search areas.
The second is access to my Hints and Tips using a side menu display.
The third has a top menu for navigation of Hints and Tips, allowing a full-width screen display below it.
Remember: I recommend 800X600 min. screen resolution for best viewing.
Give them a try!
I think you'll agree they can improve site navigation.
