....This just in Here is the fifth effort of facts, fun, frolick and figures. I will frequently cover whatever comes to mind about projects and activity around here & yada, yada, yada. Most pages are about this size in content, with few exceptions. Once the comfortable size has been reached, this happens, a sequel. Clique for a recap:
original Mail & News or the
Mail & News 2 page and the edition after
Mail & News 3 and the next edition
Mail & News 4. As always, "It's news to me."
Updated when possible and average so far has been more than once per month somewhere on the site. A date will precede each time I add a new paragraph here on this page & others.

eMAIL
Kites rise highest against the wind --- not with it.
-Winston Churchill

Once again mail can be a hazard and I am always on the lookout for better ways to keep Spam away from my door.
Let's just say to be completely honest at the same time, my ISP is not the most reliable. They try and I'm sure they have all the answers, I just have better luck with others. Same old crap, reload your software or stand on one foot all for not, whereas Apple serves up perfect mail each and every time, 'nuf said. Apple in California does a very good job, they are one of the finest in what they do & it is always the very best, even mail. ! correction ! .mac has taken over and I have chosen not to participate, d2m@telus.net is currently the preferred address to use. Two things, it's easy to remember and it's easy to spell.

The above graphic takes you to where the Site changes are noted. Visit often? You may have to reload, often. To save some time before going astray to the New Page, what has really changed in the last few months is the content, themes are working for me and that's what works so I'll go that way until inspiration hits. Before you go and write to some other guy, check out the list of addresses that is always up to date. These are found on the Family Tree Project pages.

Here at the site of D2Mcanada (feature this, somebody else is calling themselves D2M, they are U.S. based and I guess that is allowed) are here and you are there & I'll wait for you to get through it. Take the ride at the family news pages to share the adventure.

The rest of the story

This issue came about not only because the site's anniversary (five years) but also because Mrs. & I have been a well oiled machine for 25 years. Do you know what that means? Up until now it's just been your parents who have twenty-five year wedding anniversaries, not us! It also means if you know us or have been reading this for any length of time, you too are getting old, how's that for simple math?

This simple math stuff is scary, 25 years! Half way to 50, or when your grown daughter's present us with artifacts of 25 years ago! They did a great job, BTW.

It's been a pretty good ride all the same, I would recommend it.

This issue Forage in the Forest

20010508 - For the most part, completely unplanned and un-rehearsed we decided it would be best to celebrate in our traditional method of travel. This is not so much a method of travel (in the new car is a given), rather it is a method of destination. What better evening could there be in a nice quiet upscale restaurant free of phones, no TV above the bar, nor any sign of distraction what-so-ever and yet one of the finest meals around? The place that immediately came to mind sadly burned to the ground years ago so we had to settle for the next best place we could think of, The Banff Springs Hotel, Banffshire Club. I'm sure there is a snot nosed country club in town that could do as well but they don't have a hotel attached and for that reason alone cannot possibly rate in the running. When you think of fine dining does athletic facility come to mind, not likely. It came off perfectly without a hitch & with complete success. If may caution you should you get any where near this place, take a firm grasp of your wallet and hold on. If death by superior service and absolute perfect food and drink are one of your vices, let hold of the grip a bit.
The experience was .... (few words are available) the best description researched before we made reservations was, 5 star. Even the valet parking guy knew our name, the Maitre d' knew who we were before we introduced ourselves, this my friends is a five star hotel. On our return from the four course dinner of culinary treats we had champagne chilled and waiting in the room with no prior arrangement by us. Again they knew our arrival time and were ready, bed turned down, curtains drawn, of course chocolate on the pillows and freshly detailed every thing else.

The Hotel room view

From our window this view is nothing more than refreshing. Quiet, Calm and Nice, Oh my.

Photo was taken by a Canon G1 PowerShot digital camera and scaled down for use here. On close inspection you will see reflections from the window glass of lights (yellowish dots) above the fireplace or the chandelier within the room. The photo has not been altered in any way, how can I improve this view?

This window view was in a northerly direction looking just a bit east of the Banff townsite, imagine the river below and you have it. Seen below is the Spa and fitness facility annex of the main building.

Like I said the room was very nice and the service spectacular.

The Castle in the Rockies

20010509 - The weather report for the day (also left in our room) was +9 C and sunny, as we found out a bit hazy as well. From the other side of town a road (Tunnel mountain) gave us a view of the "Castle in the Rockies." Our room is partly visible from this photo but too distant to point out. This was taken after breakfast, let me say this, I have never had a $30 breakfast (for two) before and thought it was money well spent, until now.
Grab the Mrs. and get into the car for a breakfast you will not believe, take $30 with you and get there before 10:00 AM. You will be talking about it for some time to come. Ever feel the desire for goats cheese bread toasted? It's something I really enjoyed. How about a plate of corned beef hash, a cornucopia of cheeses, sausages, preserves, or a boggling variety of bagels & breads, baked apples, perfectly seasoned baked tomatoes, french toast made with actual french bread, eggs done in a myriad of ways, bacon perfect, and more things I had difficulty pronouncing in huge quantities than I ever thought were for breakfast. Just think coffee and 'poof' there it is, how refreshing to know there is somewhere that this still happens.

The Scenery

Where else could you find breath taking scenery and so close to civilization?

Jokingly part of our journey was to find something unique and different within the town of Banff. Tourists are likely the greatest number of the populous found within miles of the town. So many subjects and so little time.

To the left we have a shot of the Bow Falls just below the hotel. Again it is scaled down for use here but the photo cannot convey the brisk air, the noise of the falls, the sheer greatness of the day.

Caution: The link below points to a large file. File size is 1,394,946 bytes as stored on the server in a suitable format for QuickTime 5. The video compression used is Cinepac with no sound.

For those who want to get another view of adventure I have prepared a QTVR (QuickTime Virtual Reality) panorama of Sulphur Mountain area. The link above and here takes place in the parking lot above the gondola lower lift house. 180¡ from that in the trees is the hot springs bath house with a red car foreground, the hot springs entrance road is beyond. The red car is magnificent, eh? Notice the shine and careful attention to detail in it's up keep! The owner of this fine vehicle must be proud! Need I say more?
