Book Reviews

Now that summer is here and kids are out of school, reading becomes more important.
Why?
Because it's so easy to just say..."GO OUTSIDE!"
Encourage reading! How much? As much as possible!
For the infant/toddlers' group, give them as much as they want and as much as is possible with your schedule. You'll probably want to stop before they do.
For the preschool-first grade and the 2nd-4th grade groups, at least a half hour a day. If they want to do more then great!
5th-8th grade and older, No less than an hour a day. You'll find that they will start to get absorbed in some books and not stop at one hour.
A set time to read isn't a bad idea either. Try the time period after dinner. I think this tends to be better than the last minute, before I go to bed, so I get to stay up longer time period.
Most importantly, have fun with reading!

Infants & Toddlers

About School
By Landoll, Inc.

Another great board book! Short sentences show different areas of the school. Classroom, Cafeteria, Music Room, Gym are all featured and certain items in each area are shown with their words across the bottom of the page. Once again for the younger ones this book is a great book to point at pictures and say the words to broaden their vocabularies.

There's No Such Thing as a Dragon
By Jack Kent

This book is about when Billy Bixbee wakes up to find a dragon in his room. Billy's mother of course tells him there is no such thing as a dragon. Kids will enjoy seeing what happens as this dragon spends time with Billy. Jack Kent does a great job illustrating and writing this story.

Pippi Longstocking
By Astrid Lindgren
illustrated by Louis S. Glanzman

Pippi Longstocking is without a doubt a very entertaining book about a girl with red pigtails and no parents. She has quite a vivid imagination and a friendly pet monkey named Mr. Nilsson. Join Pippi in her adventures as she moves into her home, "Villa Villekulla". She makes new friends with neighboring children Tommy and Annika, whom she ropes into her every adventure

Dealing with Dragons
By Patricia C. Wrede

Cimerone is no ordinary princess. She doesn't like doing what's proper for princesses. She finds she is about to be made to marry a Prince and expected to do the proper thing. Instead she walks off and becomes a Dragon's (Kazul) princess. This is very improper for a princess, but what fun she has in her adventures with dragons, witches, wizards and all other sorts of wonderful things. This is the first book in the "Enchanted Forest Chronicles" and definately makes you want to read the other books. Patricia C. Wrede has done a great and imaginative job in writing this book, and we definately plan on reading some of her other books such as Calling on Dragons and Searching for Dragons.

This book was recommended to us by Pepsie Cola. Take the time to visit her page and adopt a dragon :)

I plan to add a highschool age group, but haven't completed my research on this age group.
