poll results for August:
There is a lot of gossip about who should play Anakin Skywalker in the next SW-episode.
Some polls also include Joaquin. So what do you think of the idea?68% - Yeah, I would love to see him in that role!
32% - Of course not! Joaquin in Starwars - silly idea!
I have to tell you that I really didn`t
expect such an result. (You have to count me to the one third that doesn`t want to see him
staring in an Starwars - movie.)

Here is the article from the british magazine "EMPIRE" and one pic of
Joaquin as emperor Commocus.
GLADIATOR - Empire Magazine (September 1999)
Fallen hero fights for survival in the arena of ancient Rome.
The hottest poop surrounding Ridley Scott's Ben-Hur-meets-Spartacus Roman epic remains the
on-set death of lead player Oliver Reed. Rumours abound of roles being re-jigged and of
Scott computer grafting Reeds head onto another actors body in order to
complete his scenes.
In reality save for one speech (now delivered by Derek
Jacobi), Reed was pretty much finished on the film when he supped his last in a Malta
tavern.
The colossal sword-and-sandals saga features Joaquin
Phoenix [pictured] as the Emperor Commodus, cruel successor to the philosopher-king Marcus
Aurelius, and Russell Crowe as
Narcissus Meridas, a former general and a favourite of Aurelius stripped of his rank and
reduced to the status of gladiator by Commodus, who fears him as a rival for the throne.
Forced
into mortal combat in the arena, Narcissus must survive long enough to free himself and
wreak vengeance on his sworn enemy.
A reported budget of $100 million vouchsafes sumptuous
sets, massive effects from Mill Films and a veritable vomitorium of gloriously visceral
fight scenes. Plus, Scotts proven visual flair
should ensure a screenful of authentic Roman Empire decadence. (ETA summer 2,000)

FILMNET DAILY:
GLADIATOR WORTH CROWEING ABOUT
Ridley Scotts latest epic Spartacus, which stars Russell Crowe is said by one of the
actors to make Braveheart look tiny and is as big as Ben Hur or Spartacus. It follows a
power struggle in ancient Rome where Maximus (Russell Crowe) friendship with Emperor
Marcus Aurelius brings him into conflict with the heir apparent. Co-stars include Joaquin
Phoenix, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi and Oliver Reed as well as lions, tigers, elephants
and hyenas!

Finally there is something I can post. Another article about "Quills":
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/
Award-winning director Philip Kaufman has begun principal photography in London on
``Quills,'' which stars Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix and Michael Caine, it
was announced today by Fox Searchlight President Lindsay Law. Witty, seductive and
deliciously sinister, "Quills'' is a compelling portrait of the passionately obsessed
and the dynamics of morality, consequence and freedom of expression. Kaufman directs from
a script by Doug Wright.
Kaufman, whose diverse films include "The Right Stuff,'' "Rising Sun,''
"The Unbearable Lightness of Being,'' for which his screenplay was nominated for an
Academy AwardŽ, and ``Henry and June,'' has enjoyed a considerable reputation as both
writer and director of style and imagination having written ``The Outlaw
Josey Wales.''
Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush is cast as the Marquis de Sade, whose literature changed
forever the language of sexuality and attracted controversy and admiration in equal
measure. In the years after the French Revolution, de Sade's literature continued to
threaten the moral conservatism of Napoleon's France.
Oscar-nominee Kate Winslet plays Madeleine, the innocent and feisty young laundress who
unwittingly temps Charenton asylum's most famous resident and the priest who runs it.
Joaquin Phoenix plays the Abbe Coulmier who believes toleration and a love of God can cure
any man. But, he reckons without the depths of depravity he encounters, with tragic and
terrifying consequences for all concerned.
Oscar-winner Michael Caine plays the ambitious doctor Royer-Collard, determined to
use his new appointment at the asylum as a political stepping stone.
Behind-the-scenes, director Kaufman and his producing partners Peter Kaufman, Julia
Chasman, Nick Wechsler and co-producer Mark Huffam, have assembled a kaleidoscope of
technical talent which includes OscarŽ-winning production designer Martin Childs
("Shakespeare in Love''), director of photography Rogier Stoffers, costume designer
Jacqueline West ("Rising Sun'') and editor Peter Boyle ("Robin Hood Prince of
Thieves'').
"Quills'' will be released next year.
