NOTICE ABOUT WINDOWS TIPS
***

Some of these tips involve modifying the System Registry (WIN95) or Windows Initialization files (SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI - Windows 3.X).

This is not for the novice, or faint-hearted! One mis-spelled word or number typo will crash your system on reboot in WIN95, and may do the same in Windows 3.X.

Be very careful, because you will most likely be working in the DOS environment to get the system back!

That means NO MENUS, NO HELP, NOTHING BUT A PROMPT!

Read Safeguards.

Safeguards

Before attempting to modify any file, copy the file to another location (folder/directory).

Or copy & rename it (DO NOT RENAME THE ORIGINAL FILE / name the copy something you will remember!)

Remember where you saved it, in case you need to restore the original file. To restore it, reverse which ever procedure you used to save it.

and
Your Computer Expertise

|| Tips Index || Safeguards | Legal | Notice! ||

Advice comes from many sources, most with the best intentions of improving your system, but not all doing what they claim. I have seen more than my share of tips and tricks, some that work, some that don't.

As a computer service technician, many of the systems that come through service are in need of some fine-tuning or general system maintenance to obtain their peak performance.

Knowing that these units could be performing better, has prompted me to publish this list of tips and tricks.

In this page I have simply put together information from a variety of sources (computer magazines, books, and personal experience) that will peak your systems performance, and enhance your personal computer expertise.

For experienced users, some of these tips are going to seem old-hat and a waste of time, but remember we all had to start somewhere on the learning curve. Hopefully, there will be something of interest for all levels of competency.

This is not meant to be an all-inclusive list, but as place to locate tips to improve your systems performance and perhaps learn some helpful tricks.

This list is updated as often as possible. Check back regularly for new information.

Note: Who says you can't teach an old trick to a young dog!

Have a look around!

Safeguards

Before attempting to modify any file, copy the file to another location (folder/directory) or copy & rename it (DO NOT RENAME THE ORIGINAL FILE / name the copy something you will remember!)

In the case of the System Registry file in Windows95, use the Registry / Export Registry file... in the REGEDIT.EXE program to save the current registry file.

Note: There are 2 read-only/hidden/system backup files located in the WINDOWS folder. I explain how to restore these in the System Registry Tips for WIN95.

Once you have a backup copy of the file saved, you can proceed to make the suggested modification. Be sure to follow the directions exactly!

If the desired results are not what you expected, you can copy the backup file you created back to its original location and name.

Remember: BACKUP FIRST! . . . FIRST BACKUP!
