Customizing Windows

There are thousands of programs available to improve on the Windows 3.1x user interface. When I was using this operating system, 2 of favorite add-ins were:

  • Wayfarer - a Program Manager shell replacement, which is similar to Windows 95.
  • BackMenu - a right-click activated menuing system. Again similar to features found in Windows 95.

Neither of these programs is going to make Windows 3.1x be as powerful as Windows 95, but they will enhance the ease of using this operating system.

These 2 programs may be harder to find as Windows 3.1x is gtting older. If you are interested in locating a copy of these shareware programs, please send me an e-mail at

inn-cite@geocities.com
. I would be happy to help you try to find a copy of them.

It is possible to change the look of Windows 3.1x through the Control Panel icon, located in the Main folder in Program Manager. The most dramatic changes can be done with the Colors and Desktop options. Make some changes, then go back to your desktop and see if you like the new look.

If you're still reading this page, then you need more help than I can give you here... it might be time to upgrade that computer of yours...
