Assignment Five ~ Introduction
ImageQuest
"Anytime I complain about me or about you, I am critisizing God's work... saying I know better than God." ~
Introduction
If you are to gain anything new from these pages, you must be willing to let go of your old ideas ~ willing to explore and accept new ways of thinking. You will have to "un-learn" much of what you've been taught and re-learn a new way of viewing life, yourself, others, and probably God. It is not the letting go of anything or anyone that causes us pain -- it's the hanging on. It's good to believe "When one door closes, another opens" ~ and yet, if you have your fingers in the door that's closing, it's going to hurt. In my own experience, I'm usually so wrappd up in staring at the closed door, screaming and banging on the door to re-open, that I can't see any new doors opening. We have to let go of the pain, for it is we who hug the pain so tightly to ourselves, not the pain which clings to us.
We are all creatures of habit, and naturally insecure. We do not like change because we are afraid of the unknown. Even in misery, we often hesitiate to change, for there is a certain sense of comfort in the familiar. Again, it is not change which causes us pain, but our resistance to change. In our fears and insecurities, we cry out for promises and guarantees. We want absolutes, we want to adjust but once, and then settle back in a comfortable assurance that everything will always be the same. And when inevitable changes occur, we become angry, we fight to hang on. We just don't like not knowing what to expect, and we don't like the mental exertion required in personal growth. We're emotionally and spiritually slothful. As long as we reisit change, we create misery for ourselves and thereby forfeit personal growth, fulfillment, and inner peace. and that is continual change.
This is where we discover what a genius God truly is! He created us with these insecurities and this need for reliance, absolutes, and guarantees. He has placed within us the need to depend upon things staying the same and never changing. And yet, here we are, in a life which offers no stability nor security. What is the answer? God never changes. God created us with the very needs which only He can fulfill, though He is usually the last place we look.
If true competition existed, there would be little or no individuality. We all would be capable of accomlishing the same purposes in the world, filling the same roles, and expressing the same creations. This is not so. Each of us are as unique as our finger prints, and just as individual in specific purpose. The problem most of us encounter is "finding" our true place. The gifts which were planted within us at birth belong solely to each person, and not a one of us can have nor fulfill another's true place and divine inheritence. Whatever you may have lost or failed to attain thus far was not really yours to keep. It served its purpose in your life, to instruct you and lead you further down your path, but it was never meant to belong to you. What is yours, by divine right, cannot be taken from you, and neither can you hold onto anything that isn't yours. Whether it be relationship or finance, this principle holds firm. You never again need to fear that another will "steal" anything from you! If it is truly yours, no one else can fill your shoes. Once you understand this spiritual law, you will never again feel the need to compete with another; fear of failure and loss will leave you.
To re-direct your thinking in this area, you will need to focus your attention on your own character and contributions... not anyone else's. Far too often, we are self-centered, which by paradox, causes us to keep our focus on all those around us... blaming, judging, comparing, critisizing, or worshipping. This thinking is self-centered, for what we are actually doing is either excusing or executing ourselves through our perceptions of others. In this respect, we attempt to either comfort, justify, or give ourselves reason to be failures, without ever having to face our flaws with honesty and accountablity. This is the very accomplishment you have made in completing Assignment Four.
You're probably wondering what any of this has to do with the previous assignment. This is merely an introduction, just to give you an idea of the promises we are moving towards. And so, having completed your study in Self-Honesty, it is time to continue with Assignment Five.
