He and Bartholomew Stovall Jr. are found "[i]n the Virginia Patent Book 14, 1728-1732, page 464... granted 200 acres of land lying at the head of Stoval's Branch down to Stoval's Creek, Goochland Co., Va." On 28 September 1732 in Goochland County, Virginia.
He received a patent for 400 acres on 3 December 1733 at Goochland County, Virginia.
He married Dorcas (?) in 1733/34.
On 7 October 1734 in "Deed Bk. 2, pp. 24,25, BARTHOLOMEW STOVALL and his brother, JOHN, of Goochland Co., planters, sell to EDMOND TONEY of the County of New Kent, planter, for 5 shillings sterling, a tract of land lying in Goochland Co., containing 100 acres, part of 200 acres granted by patent unto said BARTHOLOMEW and JOHN STOVALL, 28 Sept. 1732 ... "
On 9 March 1735, John Stovall, as recorded in the " ... Goochland Co., Va., Deed Bk. 2, p. 181 ... sold to THOMAS DUPRA of Goochland Co., Va., for 5 pounds currents money of Virginia, a parcel of land containing 100 acres, being part of a tract of 400 acres received by patent, 3 Dec. 1733". HIs wife, Dorcas, signed of her dower rights.
On 15 January 1744 in "Deed Book 4, p. 328, Goochland Co., Va., JOHN STOVALL sold 200 acres of land in Goochland Co., Va. on Deep Creek to PHILLIP POINDEXTER."
He paid tithes between 1748 and 1750 at Lunenburg County, Virginia.
He received a patent on Couch's Creek from the Council of Virginia on 10 November 1748 at Lunenburg County, Virginia.
On 5 March 1750, in "Deed Book A, p. 344, Granville Co., N. C., JOHN STOVALL received his first deed of land from ROBERT JONES, JR., of Surry and Colony of Virginia ... 300 acres on Grassy Creek in the County of Granville for the sum of 15 pounds current money of Virginia."
He sold 401 acres, lying on both sides of Jonathan Creek which was once part of Brunswick County and now being in Lunenburg County, to Isaac Hudson of Amelia County, Virginia on 9 June 1750 at Lunenburg County, Virginia.
He lived circa 1754 at Granville County, North Carolina.
He died circa 1781 at Granville County, North Carolina.
He left a will,that was proved in November 1781, dated 28 July 1781 at Granville County, North Carolina.

Matthew Spivey Jr. (M) b. 1676, d. c 1718 Pedigree
Matthew Spivey Jr. was also known as Matthew James Spivey II.
He was born in 1676 at Nansemond County, Virginia.
He was the son of Mathew Spivey and Judith Bowers.
He was born before 1690 at Virginia.
He is said to have married one of the daughters of John Nichols, his stepfather. In 1698.
He was appointed a Justice of the Peace of Norfolk County, Virginia, between 1702 and 1714.
He was on the Rent Roll in 1704 at Norfolk County, Virginia.
He bought 100 acres from John Burkett in 1714 at on Stopping Creek, Chowan County, North Carolina.
He served as a Captain in Military (militia ?) in 1716 at Norfolk County, Virginia.
He died circa 1718.
He left a will which was probated on 15 May 1719 at Norfolk County, Virginia.

Sarah Nichols was the daughter of Major John Nichols.
She is said to have married one of the daughters of John Nichols, his stepfather. In 1698.
She died before 1718. She was not named in her husband's will so she may have pre-deceased him..

He was born before 1719.
He was the son of Matthew Spivey Jr. and Sarah Nichols.
He was born circa 1730; This conflicts with Dunagin's claim that both Matthew's parents died before 1718.

Mathew Spivey was born in 1657 at Nansemond County, Virginia.
He was born in 1661 at Virginia; +.
He was the son of George Spivey.
He married Judith Bowers; +.
He was granted 79 acres, on 20 April 1681 at the upper parish, Nansemond County, Virginia. The 79 acres is described as beginning and continuing on the south side of a branch that runs up behind Edward Holmes. The land was granted for the transportation of two persons: Elizabeth Johnson and John Rikason. In the original document Nansemond was spelled "Nanzemond".
He was was granted 200 acres. On 16 April 1683 at the upper parish, Nansemond County, Virginia. The 200 acres was granted for transportation of four persons: "Henry, Bess, Overseer Negroes". The land begins at a marked gum by or nigh the Cypress Swamp, and is a corner marked tree of his brother George Spivey's Swamp, and runs by his said brother's line.
He died before 1690 leaving his wife and small children.

She married Major John Nichols before 1 November 1696 at Norfolk County, Virginia; Judith is named in John Nichols will, dated Nov. 11, 1696, which was proved on May 17 1697.
She died in 1720/21; +.

George Spivey (M) b. 1622, d. 1690 Pedigree

George Spivey was born in 1622 at Barnsley, Yorkshire, England.
He was the son of Thomas Spivie.
He immigrated circa 1643 to Lower Norfolk County, Virginia. He was transported by Thomas Dew, who was granted 450 acres for transporting nine persons: George Speevy, William Broughton, Robert Fleming, Samuel Jeffery, Henry Brown, John Corne, and Elizabeth Tockwook.
As of circa 1643, George Spivey was also known as George Speevy Since spelling was often phonetic, his name appears in places as Spivie, Spivy, and Spivey.
He was granted a 150 acres for transportation of three persons: Jno. Clay, Margaret Jresh, and Will Patrick. Between 1666 and 1679 at Nansemond County, Virginia.
He died in 1690.

George Spivey was born in 1658 at Nansemond County, Virginia.
He was the son of George Spivey.
He was granted 400 acres for the transportation of eight persons: "Mary Harman, Benja. Vickers, Wm. Wollins, Jno, Yeamans, Sam'l Harper, Richard Porter, Jno. Innis, Jn. Allin". + on 20 April 1681 at Nansemond County, Virginia.
He was granted 800 acres. 400 acres of said land being granted unto the said GEORGE SPIVEY by patent 23 April 1681 and the other 400 acres is due for transportation of 8 persons: Richard Crook, Tho. Sanders, Jon. Dayley, Wm. Gannock, Wm. Wright, Sam'l White, Ed Heath, Wm. Bayley, 16 April 1683. + on 27 April 1686 at the upper parish, Nansemond County, Virginia.
He was taxed on the Rent Roll in 1704 at Nansemond County, Virginia.

He was enumerated with Michael Smith Cason on the census of 17 September 1850 at Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, as "Jas. E. Cason". He was listed as a male of age 17 who was born in South Carolina. His occupation was given as none.
He died in 1867.

Michael Smith Cason is head of household on the census of 17 September 1850 at Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, as "Michel Cason". He was listed as a male of age 50 who was born in South Carolina. His real estate was valued at $12,400. His occupation was given as planter.. Enumerated with him were James Elijah Cason, Nancy Edwards, Michael C. Cason, Elmira Cason, Thomas C. Cason, Ashbury D. Cason, Nancy Cason, ? Cason, John Cason, Nancy Ramsey and Mary McDaniel.
He is thought to have died on 1 April 1878 at Claiborne Parish, Louisiana.
He was buried at the Cason Cemetery on the Blackburn-Leton road, Louisiana. The Blackburn-Leton road crosses from Claiborne Parish into Webster Parish. The location of the Cason Cemetery along this road is unknown. It is also said that the graves are unmarked..
He may have died on 26 June 1878 at Monroe County, North Carolina.
