He bought a 50 acre farm from Hiram A. Goff by working for 50 cents a day. He bought an additional 50 acres under the same terms. Over time, he increased his holdings to over 865 acres.
He died on 16 August 1904 at Gilmer County, West Virginia, at age 83.
He was buried at Union Church Cemetery on Sinking Creek, Gilmer County, West Virginia.
