Real World News
Gays and straights - equal treatment
According to a Time/CNN poll conducted by Yankelovich Partners on October 14-15 among 1,036 adults, a clear majority--82%--of Americans say the government should treat homosexuals and heterosexuals as equals (even though 48% believe homosexuality is morally wrong). Fifty-one percent say gay men and lesbians could change their sexual orientation if they chose to; 36% don't think that's possible, while the rest are unsure. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3%.

Get a job in PV
By Bille

Running a community involves many commitments - and possibilities. Mr Mayor admits that he has kept too many of these jobs tight to his hairy chest, for a little too long, but is now realising that enough is enough...

PV Job Central will be officially opened November 7th, and hopefully will *you* be found in that long queue (ehem...) of citizens begging for a job in Pink Village.

The Job Central is meant to be a market where you can sign up for smaller or larger jobs, but also to see who is in charge of the various stuff - in case you would like to share an idea. The clue is that if we all took our turns in updating jpgs and midis, joining the PV Council, contributing to this newspage, etc., there would be less work on each of us. It's up to you for how long you like to be such a caretaker - variation can be a good thing, and it will probably not exactly do the community spirit any harm, either:)

You can check out the current job offers today, but the formal signing up will be at the opening, or by mail/tg to Bille later on.

Did you ask for your outcome? Well... the gain will no doubt be a more interesting community for all:)

Pride Memories
By Bille

PV Pride Festival, October 17 & 18, has been added to Pink Village's and AlphaWorld's history. Great fun, good memories, and probably the most important of all - we all made new friends and got to know each other a little better. Thanks to a great amount of work and support from many citizens, the festival turned out to be the celebration that we all were dreaming of. Not even computer crash and unstable connections could stop us:)

Playing Simon T a joke just after the Vicars and Tarts Party. Click picture to see report and more pics from the Pride!

The most popular events attracted about 20 persons, and it's no surprise that both the Alien Date Party and the Vicars and Tarts Party were among them. Although, it's also fun to report that the Community Booths hours were greatly visited. Among the other attractions, the Pride Quilt and the opening/closing ceremonies in Pride Park had a nice turn out, as well.

The common opinion seems to be that PV should host annual Pride Feasts, and hereby you're all warned - your kind offers to give a helping hand next year have been recorded to the logs:))

If you have yet not seen the pictures and reports from the Pride, they can be found at the PV Pride web page that will be up for a long time still. You should also check IALGPC's Newsletter, that gave us great publicity in their InterPride News (Fall 1998 Edition).

Lionheart NL Questionnaire
By LionheartNL

Lionheart NL
Starting this issue, Pink Point will feature the 'Lionheart NL Questionnaire', focusing on a different PV citizen each issue. The idea is to get to know our fellow citizens a bit better, to get an idea of what we all think of PV, but mostly it's just fun to read!

Lionheart NL selected Idealist to be his first 'victim', and the results can be found here! Enjoy the read and beware of Lionheart NL... next issue it could be YOU!

The Rainbow Flag
By Bille (Source: Rainbow Icon Archive)

The rainbow flag has become the easily-recognised colours of pride for the gay community. Use of this icon by the gay community began in 1978 when it first appeared in the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade.

San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag in response to a need for a symbol that could be used year after year. The origin flag had

eight stripes, each colour representing a component of the community: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit.

Due to limitations when mass-producing the flag, pink and turquoise were removed from the design, and royal blue replaced indigo. This six-colour version spread from San Francisco to other cities, and soon became the widely-known symbol of gay pride and diversity it is today. It is even officially recognised by the International Congress of Flag Makers.

The multicultural symbolism of the rainbow is nothing new -- Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition also embraces the rainbow as a symbol of that political movement. The rainbow symbolism from the hippie movement and black civil rights groups, and it can also be found in many world-wide native myths and stories related to gender and sexuality issues.

The rainbow flag has inspired a wide variety of related symbols, such as freedom rings and other accessories. There are plenty of variations of the flag.

PV Guide - at your service
By Bille

"Type my name (PV Guide) if you want my assistance"... You have probably heard him announcing his service before, but do you know exactly what he is offering?

Mute... mute...!

To chat with him (own him) you'll have to type his name ("PV Guide", not "Hi PV Guide"). If you do so, he can help you in many ways, here are some of the topics (and keywords);

  • News - latest Pink Village news.
  • Event - upcoming social events in PV.
  • Tour - PV Guide will guide you to and inform you on various PV locations. Currently you can choose between four local destinations.
  • Menu - to have the other options listed.

The bot's services will be extended as he asks for new challenges. A tiny booth has been built for him in front of Pink Parade, and unless you call him, he will no longer walk about randomly. Neither will he greet everybody that gets within range - that became too annoying for many of us. Every 5-10 minutes he will say a line, though - but his sayings will be updated by time, and you are welcome with suggestions:). You can always mute him by right-clicking him.

The PV bot can be a great help for new visitors. The only problem is that someone needs to be on-line to keep him running. For the time being, he is on duty mainly 21-22:00 vrt.

If you have suggestions or like to add news etc, contact Bille. If PV Guide becomes too annoying, we'll of course deal with that - your feed back is needed for making adjustments to his appearance.
