Here a comment about Joaquin from a person who attended a
test-screening of "Gladiator":
...
Joaquin Phoenix stands out in my mind with a great
opposing performance as Maximus`s nemesis Emperor
Commodus. The real Commodus was described as worse than
the plague by scholars of ancient Rome and Joaquin brings
out the villain in him beautifully. Politically corrupt
to the core, we see the psychological downfall of
Commodus throughout the film. I only hope that this film
springs Joaquin into a much larger spotlight which he
rightfully deserves. ...

Gladiator:
The Next Titanic
Columnist Liz Smith, who received an advance look at
DreamWorks' upcoming Gladiator (2000), writes today that
the film "could be the Titanic of 2001." She
pronounces the Ridley Scott-directed movie, due to be
released on May 5, "in the epic category of Ben Hur
(1959), Spartacus (1960) and Cleopatra (1963)," and
adds, "I never thought [I'd] see the likes of
Gladiator on screen again."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Look out for the magazines Premiere, Movieline and Empire
(May issues). They feature "Gladiator" and will
bring some pictures that include Joaquin. Here are some
excerpts:
From
"Premiere" (05/00)
"She
(Connie Nielsen) did a ton of research and knew
everything," Phoenix says. "Anytime I
had a question I talked to her."
"If
anybody's ever been a big brother to me," says the actor
(who lost his big brother, River, in 1993), "It was
Crowe."
From
"Movieline" (05/00)
Q: What inspired you to cast Joaquin Phoenix as your
cruel emperor, Commodus?
Ridley Scott: I'd seen Joaquin in a picture
that I'd produced called "Clay pigeons" and
thought he had an interesting face. Then I was shocked by
what he pulled off in "Return to paradise" - I
thought that was as good as it gets. That did it for me.
I had a feeling in my bones about him, an intuition, and
I couldn't shake it, so I had no other really serious
contenders for our prince of darkness.

"Quills" and it`s love triangle:
The
asylums young priest, Abbe de Coulmier (Joaquin
Phoenix), humanely tries to rehabilitate the
Marquis (Geoffrey Rush) twisted soul while keeping
Madeleine (Kate Winslet) at a safe distance, both from
the Marquis and himself. Through the endless days and
nights at the asylum the two opposing men form a
tentative relationship of mutual tolerance. But, neither
is willing admit the one secret they have in common
their feelings for Madeleine. The three form an
unlikely and dangerous love triangle that proves to be
the ultimate test of the priests sanctity and the
Marquiswrath.

Here is an funny little article about Michael
Caine and his short co-stars (thanks to Harumi!)
Caine Makes Small Talk
Oscar nominee MICHAEL CAINE has enormous admiration for
the young Hollywood stars - but can't believe how short
they are. Caine, an imposing six foot two inches, has
worked with a number of young stars including EWAN
MCGREGOR, STEPHEN DORFF, JOAQUIN PHOENIX and TOBEY
MAGUIRE. The star says, "I think they are wonderful.
They are very serious and hard working. But the thing
that strikes me is that I've never seen a tall one."
He adds, "It seems to me that there is a whole
generation of very talented small people. Good looking,
yes. But maybe there are more ambitious because they are
more angry because they are short."
Inspired
by last weeks Oscar-gala, I put up the following poll:
Joaquin has three really pretentious movies coming up:
"Gladiator" + "Quills" + "The
Yards"
which are loaded with big names like Russel Crowe,
Geoffrey Rush, Michael Caine, Kate Winslet, Faye Dunaway,
James Caan, Ellen Burstyn. All those actors/actresses
already have an Oscar at home or at least got nominated
for one.
"Gladiator" is a big epos, and as we know the
Academy loves such long pieces, it will at least get
nominees in Best Art Direction, in Best Costume and in
technical categories. "Quills" seems to be a
good character-piece and as we got to know the Academy
loves Geoffrey Rush and Michael Caine. "The
Yards" won`t stand behind, too, because of its
excellent cast.
The question is, which of these movies will be most
succesful at next years Oscar-race?
