Description of Project SEED

Project SEED is a non-profit organization of mathematicians and scientists from industry, universities and research corporations who Socratically teach advanced, conceptually oriented mathematics to at-risk students in urban areas. By successfully discovering concepts from algebra, calculus, and other higher mathematics, these students experience significant growth in academic confidence and critical thinking skills. Evaluated extensively with consistently outstanding results over its almost forty years of history, Project SEED replicates success in each program through careful implementation of the program's components and through continuous quality control.

Project SEED classroom instruction classes take place four days a week as a supplement to a regular mathematics curriculum. Surfrederick concentratesSemester-length SEED classes have been shown to have the greatest positive impact on the students' achievement with multiple semesters of SEED producing a cumulative impact. Project SEED classes are taught with whole intact classes including students of all ability levels. The classroom teacher remains with the class during the Project SEED lesson observing the SEED methodology and participating actively in the lesson.

The classroom teacher's participation in the Project SEED class promotes the success of the students. The classroom teachers also receive the added benefit of observing superb instructional methodology modeled with their own students. This in-class modeling is one of three elements that comprise Project SEED's professional development program for classroom teachers, administrators, and other education professionals. In addition to modeling in the classroom, teachers participating in the professional development program attend staff development workshops discussing various aspects of the Project SEED Socratic group discovery methodology and of Project SEED's advanced mathematics curriculum. In conjunction with the in-class modeling and workshops, teachers then receive consultations with Project SEED specialists who work with the teachers on areas of specific interest to them in methodology, mathematics and pedagogy. Development of superb teachers supports the goals of Project SEED.

Along with classroom instruction to students and professional development for teachers, Project SEED also seeks to involve the families of students in their academic success. In workshops designed for parents and families, Project SEED specialists share tips and strategies for working with students and mathematics topics for everyday life. Project SEED hosts events for families which celebrate the achievements of SEED students. At each school, SEED specialists attend parent-teacher meetings, school open houses, and offer services to the school to support existing family activities. In each district, Project SEED acts as a resources in mathematics and methodology, assisting in such district activities as math contests. In supporting many avenues for family involvement through Project SEED, the program increases the chances for success of students by bringing families even more into the process of their children's education.
