If it's in pink that means I think they're especially 'stylin'!!
ALL-TIME
Japanese music is cool. There are lots of reasons. The main reason being that I am Japanese so I am biased. But even if I was objective I'd have to say it is cool. I love all the old songs-a lot of which I've picked up through watching the 'Monomane' shows (Monomane=impersonation. Please see the tv section for a low down on Japanese tv). Old songs would be 'enka' (more 'traditional' stuff) or Japanese translations of English(American) pop songs (50s-60s) and their own wave of pop music after The Beatles. The new music is really diverse.
Regurgitator
saw them at the '99 Big Day Out. AND I'll be seeing them on Thursday night-5th August '99 at the Metro. Who is the keyboard guy? He's always the one having the most fun yet he's never mentioned in any of the articles I've read. What's going on? He also plays keyboard for Happyland. Well, at the BDO anyway. Quan hardly ever looks at the audience, he's either got his eyes shut or he's looking at his guitar. He's cute! I have a hard time distinguishing who's singing what.
later...they were mad! We were right up the front and there wasn't much moshing...whew! The best bit was when Ben sang "feel's alright!" Keyboard guy was having fun. Funny!
Here's a pic from the concert at the Metro That's Quan Yeomans the frontman. He's hot! But he's got a girlfriend-d'oh.
Fun Lovin' Criminals
became a fan when I saw them at the '99 Big Day Out! I wasn't intending to see them, I just wanted a good spot for when 'gurge came on. But they turned out to be the best band for the whole day! Too bad I wasn't on TV even tho' I was right up the front. Near Fast. They're funny and cool and sincere and friendly and professional. They seemed to be having a genuinely good time even tho' it was so hot and probably uncomfortable in their swish suits! Fast is hot!
Garbage
Saw them play at The Hordern Pavilion in Oct '96. They sucked! I saw the video to 'When I Grow Up' and she wasn't anything like that! She's gone all Gwen Stefani on us. She looks pretty sometimes and other times she looks like an alien! It's funny how that Crush song wasn't on their album. The trend now seems to be to not include any soundtrack stuff on albums. Why is that? Like Radiohead's 'Talk Show Host' and Foo Fighters' 'Walking After You' or was it?
silverchair
Used to call them highchair! It's sad how he was ana. He stole my word cos I made up ana around 1992!
Mansun
not Marilyn Manson tho' some of their stuff is ok. (But man, is he freaky!) I bought their 'Grey Lanturn' album without knowing any of their songs! I just heard a review of it and it sounded pretty good. And it was too!
The Living End
saw them at the '99 BDO. They're the coolest! But how come that 'From Here On In' song isn't on their album?
Sean Lennon
could have seen him at '99 BDO but didn't get a chance
Green Day Tre seems like a funny guy. I read some interview where he's pooped his pants cos he was drumming so hard-like when Rob was doing a sendup of that African priest guy witht he glasses what's his name again? "What the world needs is love. What the Late Show does is love" Only TLS fans will know what I'm going on about.
Spiderbait
saw them at Sydney Uni '98. They rocked!
Superjesus
'99 BDO. Her dress/bra strap kept falling down. She's sweet & cute. I mean that objectively and all.
No Doubt
how long 'til they have a new album? Their last one was from '95 might I add! Their new vid is pretty cool.
Offspring
'97 BDO. They were cool! I think 'Smash' is their best, followed by 'Ignition'. Their new one is crap. But I like 'Pretty Fly' tho' the novelty is running thin.
Beastie Boys
even tho' all their stuff sounds the same! I seem to have amassed 4 of their albums, yet I've hardly listened to any of them properly.
Space
One finds it strange that they have such a distinct (and very different) sound, yet they are quite young. It's nice and refreshing to hear the different styles the vocalist adopts to suit the style of song. They're cool!
Ben Folds Five
Their new stuff doesn't have the humour of their earlier stuff. Not as daring?
Radiohead
Their new stuff is so different to their old stuff. I like it much better. "The Bends" is the best so far. Their songs have a hypnotic, depressing yet uplifting impact. Like a surreal, druggy, philosophically influenced nightmare quality. Bizarre.
Morcheeba So far I only have the 'Big Calm' album. And when I got that I only knew two of their songs and one of them wasn't on that album!!! But I trusted my instincts and I was right. They are seriously smooth, like Yoplait.
Love Jones
A jazz band! They're so cool. I found out about them from Swingers. I've "discovered" many a band from that film. Jon Favreau must have good taste! I now have both of their albums.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
ditto above. They're awesome. I would love to see them perform at The Derby! I have their album too. It's cool! I couldn't believe they were voted Best New Group at the '99 Blockbuster Awards! Excellent! Didn't they also perform at the Super Bowl or something?
Foo Fighters
(how different to Nirvana!)
Fastball
again, I bought this on the strength of 'The Way'. A bit of a South American feel?
Eskimo Joe
They're Aussie! I saw them support Supergrass and they were much more energetic and fun than the main band! One of them was pretty hot too! I got their EP and that's pretty cool. Can't wait for their first album.
The Mavis's
their album is pretty groovy. Nice cover, tho' kinda spooky.
Weird Al Yankovic
(e's just a legend)
Other Stuff
Jazz
Classical!
soundtracks
TV themes (I have most of the Television's Greatest Themes CD set! They're a cak!)
Old/Dead
Soundgarden
('97 BDO. They were the finale. And probably their last major performance! But now I hear they're getting back together?)
PUSA
(say it "pyuusa"!! Sep. '97. Probably their last concert! They were the coolest!)
Oasis
(I've had their new album for about 2 years now and haven't even listened to it!!!)
Pearl Jam
(their earlier stuff was definitely better. I liked their video with all the anime stuff tho'.)
80s stuff (it's so daggy and embarrassing but there are some good songs!)
Oldschool
KC and the Sunshine Band
(all their songs are groovy! My fave is 'Keep It Comin' Love' Actually a lot of their songs are pretty rude!)
The Average White Band
)I was pretty shocked to find out that they are actually white (with an exception from time to time) and they're Scottish or something!)
Sly and the Family Stone
(actually I only know like, one song. But lots of people like them and I want to get a 'best of' deal)
I got a Best of album! I like 'Everyday People' and 'Stand'.
Simon & Garfunkel
(they are ultimate all-time favourite group ever in the history of the universe! Their music is groovy/catchy/funky/cool etc and yet their lyrics can be read as true poetry. They make me sad/happy/think. Whatever, they're just the best!)
The Beatles
(of course! Is there actually anyone that doesn't like them?)
Tom Jones
(he has an amazing voice and range! He hasn't lost it that's for sure, it's just his old sogs are better. His live version of 'Twist & Shout' performed at The Flamingop Lounge in Vegas is unreal. Like, I've never liked the song (Beatles) but his version is so good! It's like a completely different song!)
Dionne Warwick (She also does some great covers-'We Can Work It Out' is the black verion of the Beatles tune and it's groovin'! I also love the song 'People Got to be Free' I don't know whether it' a cover or not but it's so cool)
The Jackson Five
(Micheal was a great singer as a kid! I love 'Ben' tho' the film is a shocker. Some of his later-but-before-the-pencil-sharp-nose phase songs are pretty good like 'One Day in Your Life' and all.)
James Brown
(It's amazing how he can make the same 3 words repeated over and over into a great song! All black singers seem to have this talent. Weird. A couple of his tracks on the Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels s'track)
Elvis
(he had heart. He seemed to be a really sweet guy. But then u read about the drugs and how he was a ladies man and how he didn't like to show his knees in public and how he was so keen after Priscilla in that Emma-like way and how he made her dye her hair black and his diet and all and u think, maybe he was a bit of a putz. I dunno.)
The Carpenters
(sad how her fave song was 'Goodbye to Love'. It's almost prophetic. Their songs sound the same too!)
too many 60s & 70s acts to go through. A lot of one-hit wonders and all. Here are a few that come to mind: Smokey Robinson, The Beach Boys, The Platters, The Four Tops, The Mamas and the Papas('Words of Love' is so cool), Jefferson Airplane, Lulu(the James Bond theme 'Man with the Golden Gun' is great. She gets to really show her range), The Ventures, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds etc etc....
Soundtracks
1. Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
(standout tracks: 'Walk this Land' 'Fool's Gold'(I know it's an old song!) '18 With a Bullet' gets better with every listen.)
Pulp Fiction
(Standout tracks: 'Misirlou', 'Let's Stay Together'-you always seem to see Brucey's face just staring blankly whenever u hear this!, 'Comanche', 'Jungle Boogie' tho' I don't remember it in the film.)
Reservoir Dogs
(Standout tracks: 'Stuck in the Middle With You' !!!! will always hold a slightly different meaning from now on! 'Little Green Bag', 'I Gotcha' cracks me up)
Clerks
(Standout tracks: That Alice in Chains One. Actually there aren't any that come to mind, maybe that Stabbing Westward one, before their fame and all. The dialogue. But I could think of funnier bits to put on there! Funny how a lot of s'tracks put dialogue in now, ever since Pulp?)
Oliver!
Standout tracks: 'You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two'
The Sound of Music!
Standout tracks: 'I Have Confidence' 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen'
Saturday Night Fever
(Standout tracks: tho' the whole album is groovin' I'd have to say 'Disco Inferno')
West Side Story
(Standout tracks: 'Tonight' medley, 'A Boy Like That' I have the broadway version and the movie version but I thought the broadway version was (for years) was the movie version but then it wasn't. I've listened to the broadway one so often I think it's better than the movie version. Damn!)
Jackie Brown
(Standout tracks: '110th Street' -cool when she's singing to it in the car- 'Strawberry Letter 23' or whatever it's called, 'Street Life' -I thought she was saying 'street light'- most of the songs are good.)
Get Shorty
Japanese Music
1. Judy and Mary
(I love them! I think Yuki (vocals) is so cool. And she's a good singer too. My favourite album is 'The Power Source' I didn't really like their latest album. Too weird and experimental. Some of the songs were ok but overall it lacked the catchiness of their earlier stuff. My fave song is 'Birthday Song' but it really doesn't have anything to do with a birthday! They have unusual themes which is cool, right?)
Glay
(I used to pretty obsessed with them. I think Jiro is cute-but he looks very androgynous sometimes-which is also true of Teru. I like their rock stuff but I also like their ballads. 'Beloved' is a great album. Their earlier stuff is ok but not great as a whole album.)
Spitz
(I love them! I have most of their albums-they have a lot!!!
Their songs are very summery. They sing about happy stuff and he's got a nice husky voice (as opposed to a yukky husky voice like Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart!!). Also I like them cos a lot of their songs have nothing to do with love and mushy stuff.)
elephant kashimashi
(Raw. I like their songs cos again, they're not about love, but about courage and life and trying to achieve your goals blah blah blah. Sort of uplifting and funny. Deep. Maybe.)
Oguro Maki
(She has an amazing range! I think she has more impact than Mariah Carey, to me anyway. She has a lot of powerful rock songs. A lot of them are uplifting, like, 'Genkidashite' (hey, I'm not swearing! She's cool. I love 'La.La.La' well, that's what it's called! )
The Yellow Monkey
(Rock! They're dirty! But their music is cool, which is the important thing. They have some surprisingly delicate/dainty/lovely/syrupyspelling?) songs. I have a 'best of' album-the second one.)
L<->R
I'm not sure what their name stands for-I used to think it was 'left to right' but I think I read somewhere what it was and I thought 'that's dumb' but I can't remember what it was. Again, they don't sing about love all the time. They have some 'cute' songs. Kind of crisp and refreshing, whatever that means.)
Inoue Yosui
(I think he's a bit of a legend. He's got a loverly voice and he's kind of like Simon & Garfunkel. His lyrics are a bit like poetry. But he also has funny, silly songs. He writes for a lot of other people. He should just keep all the hits for himself!)
B'z
(They have been around for a while but their output is huge. They've had more No. 1's than anyone, I think. I dunno. I probably made that up. But they've had heaps of hits!)
Nakajima Miyuki
(She's been around for ages. She seems to have had a lot of tv series themes
Old/Used to like/Still like but they seem to have disappeared off the pface of the earth
Chage & Aska
(I think they were snobs. They never appeared on the 'Kohaku' (yearly tv concert event usu. about 4-6hrs leading up to New Year. Been going for 50 years! All the major musos plus the ones who've had a huge hit that year get to appear. 'Say Yes' was one of the No.1 hits but my favourite is 'Morning Moon' and 'Yubiwa ga Naita' <- I think that's what it's called. They're both older singles.)
Tube
(I liked them more when the vocals guy was single. That woman he married is pretty and all but all she eats is pasta-morning, noon and night! That's unnatural for a Japanese person. He's a really good singer! If he's not careful, he'll pop a vein tho')
I like but I'm kind of reluctant to admit it
