There is an interview with Joaquin in an Austrian magazine (the pics are already
on the page). He principally talks about "Gladiator", kind of stuff we already heard several times in the last weeks, and so I am not going to translate the whole article, here are just a few picks:

When asked if he did see Rome before, Joaquin answers: "No. When we did Gladiator, I had some days off, and I used them to see the city. I wanted to visit the Colosseum, but it was closed. I tried to explain to those guys that I was emperor Commodus, but they just said `Fuck You´ in Italian to me."

Asked about his relation to other actors, he answers that it is this competition that makes everybody trying to be better. That was always so, like f.e. in the years of Marlond Brando and Montgomery Clift. They watched the films of the other and got motivated. Joaquin is inspired by the movies of Billy Cudrup, Ed Norton and Matt Damon.

Then he tells, that he isn`t much into sport, but he likes to read. And the music he likes includes: everything, from Ella Fitzgerald to John Lennon and Public Enemy. He prefers to listen to The Beatles, John Lennon, Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley. Their music moves him, because it is simple and honest.

At the end he tells, that the people from Gladiator had promised to send him a sword from the movie, as a memory, but they didn`t do it until yet ...

Some info on "The Yards":
``It's a social drama that combines the travails of a family with the collusion of business and government,'' Gray, 31, told a press conference in Cannes. While ``The Yards'' struggles against the level of artistic achievement of a stack of Asian films competing, its fast-paced gangster story and high tension are likely to make it a greater commercial success than the more artsy productions. The box-office appeal will probably get a further boost from its star-studded cast, which includes Charlize Heron, James Caan, Faye Dunaway, Joaquin Phoenix and Burstyn.

``There was an ambition to make the movie look like a collection of paintings, to make it seductively beautiful,'' Gray said. ``We under-exposed the film and milked the blacks to make them look like burnished browns. I even considered putting the film in an oven and baking it at 125 degrees to see what it would look like,'' he added. ``I just wanted to do something different than what's been done before.''

Leo Handler, played by Mark Wahlberg, serves time in prison after taking the blame for a crime committed by a group of friends, and upon his release goes to the one place where he thinks he will be safe -- his mother's home. He takes a job in the subway construction company of his well-connected uncle (Caan) and is reunited with his best buddy, the hot-headed macho Willie (Phoenix) and Willie's girlfriend Erica (Theron).

``My character thinks he's the king of a kingdom which is really the size of an anthill,'' Caan said. ``He's pretty much on the way to emotional death when the film opens.'' One night, Willie takes Leo along with a group of friends to sabotage the competing company's subway cars. But the plan goes awry when the yard master is stabbed to death and a policeman beaten into a coma. Leo is blamed for the crimes and flees.

At the
Official Cannes Film Festival Page you can watch clips of the "The Yards" press conference, the photo call, and the steps ... Joaquin isn`t actually talking at the Press-conference clip, you just can see him sitting next to director James Gray. In the Photo-Call clip you see the actors posing for the photographers and you can hear the press people screaming the names of the stars. In the Steps-clip you can watch the red-carpet ceremony before the official viewing.

Also the Eonline-Cannes-Special is worth a look. And you will find a picture of Joaquin in the photo-section.

At Rotten Tomatoes you will find many many reviews of "Gladiator" including infos on the actors, news, downloads, etc. (In the News Section you will find a link to a video-interview with Joaquin.)
Thanks to Violetine for the link!

Entertainment Weekly features an article called "How near does ''Gladiator'' come to the truth?" with some interesting fact about the real Commodus:

Just how rotten was the emperor's no-goodnik son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix)?
As rotten as sandals without socks. In the movie, Commodus pines after his sis (Connie Nielsen) but never beds her. But ''the biography we have of Commodus says he slept with any female relative he could find,'' says Alison Futrell, author of ''Blood in the Arena.'' The real Commodus (who ruled from a.d. 180 to 192) also loved to climb into the ring, facing down both gladiators and beasts -- including ostriches. (His fights, however, were as fixed as an episode of ''WWF Smackdown!'') The one evil deed the flick unfairly pinned on Commodus? His father's murder; Aurelius died of disease, probably smallpox.

Entertainment Tonight Online has a interview with Joaquin about Gladiator (what his reaction to the movie were, what kind of research he did, tells about sword fight choreography, working with Russel and Ridley Scott, ....

BUT the most interesting part of the interview is this statement:

" ... I am in pre-production for a film with JEFF GOLDBLUM that is about "out of the deck" actors in Hollywood. ..."

I was already wondering what might come after "Quills" (which is the last movie he did), but they weren`t any hints on the net, ... until now! I sure will look out for more informations on that new movie!

Well, here is what I found until now: (I am quite sure, that has to be the movie, Jeff Goldblum is in it and it is about actors ....)

"One of The Hollywood Ten"
Variety reports that Jeff Goldblum has begin filming a movie about actors, writers and directors placed on the Hollywood blacklist. Goldblum will play writer Herbert Biberman, who, with his actress wife Gale Sondergaard, found themselves blackballed. The film was written and will be directed by Karl Francis, and produced by Stuart Pollack and Juan Gordon. Shooting is in Spain.
(note: the
imdb.com lists the movie as a TV-movie)

From the
Official Gladiator Page:
The man upon whom Maximus seeks his revenge is Commodus, who becomes the emperor of Rome upon the death of Marcus Aurelius. It was important to the drama that Maximus' strength be counterbalanced by an equal measure of power on the part of his adversary-albeit another kind of power. The filmmakers found what they were looking for embodied in the quiet intensity of Joaquin Phoenix.

Ridley Scott had previously worked with Phoenix when he executive produced the film "Clay Pigeons," in which the actor had starred. "When we offered him the part, I think the most surprised person was Joaquin himself," the director says. "He is not the physically imposing type one might have envisioned in the role, but he conveys the complexities of this corrupt ruler in a very courageous way. He exposes the vulnerability that is juxtaposed with the ruthlessness of Commodus." The mercurial quality of the part was only one of the incentives for Phoenix. "Between the script and the cast that was being put together, I felt the film had a great deal to offer. Talking to Ridley, I could see that this was going to be a movie of great spectacle and scope, but also one that allowed for a character-driven story," he notes. "Commodus is a character I really enjoyed exploring as an actor," Phoenix reflects. "I think the best way to describe him is as a spoiled child. He's 19 years old, but wields an incredible amount of power, so he has all the emotions that go with being that age without having had the guidance he needed to handle that power. He's vulnerable and sad one moment and throwing a tantrum the next. He desperately wants the love of the people, but the irony of the story is that the gladiatorial games he decrees to get the masses to love him are ultimately what bring his nemesis to Rome."

Take a look at the Official Gladiator Page again! They have a lot more to offer now (like f.e. behind the scene clips).

from imdb.com:
Russell Crowe Becomes Big Brother For Joaquin Phoenix
JOAQUIN PHOENIX found a new big brother when he shot his latest movie with RUSSELL CROWE. The 25-year-old actor - who made the 911 call the night his real life older brother RIVER PHOENIX overdosed on a LA pavement - says Crowe looked after him while they worked together on Gladiator (2000). With scenes filmed in Britain, Malta and Morocco, Joaquin says Crowe would always be there for him and since filming wrapped they have become the best of friends. He adds, "If anyone has been a big brother to me, it is Crowe."

Well, as expected - "Gladiator" topped the Box Office Charts with $32.7M at the last weekend.

In the latest issue of "Vogue" is a section on Casey Affleck and part of the article reads:
"According to Joaquin Phoenix, this guy is 'going to come out in five years having writen, directed, produced, and starred in his own movie.' someone who's going to make everyone smake their heads and say, 'Oh, God, we really slipped on him."
(thanks to Sarah for the quote!)

There are two new articles from THIS IS LONDON (thanks to Bridge for the info)
The first one is called "The Phoenix has landed" and is written by Mr. Phoenix himself! It is just a short article, and he basically talks about "Gladiator" and Ridley Scott and Russel Crowe.

The second article is called "Even an emeperor likes a good cry" and tells about "Gladiator" of course, about how crying makes you feel better and about doing comedy - "I enjoy humour more than anything, I don't really sit around banging my head and crying all the time."

It's the end of a long afternoon of interviews and Joaquin Phoenix is not looking good. His hair is rumpled. His suit is rumpled. His shoulders are preternaturally droopy. He couldn't look worse if he'd just been pounded around the Colosseum by a strapping Russell Crowe. ....... read on here

From the imdb.com:
Joaquin Phoenix Finds Acting Coach In Russell Crowe
Movie star JOAQUIN PHOENIX wanted RUSSELL CROWE to abuse him before shooting Gladiator (2000) - but the New Zealander got him drunk instead. Phoenix the brother of tragic star RIVER PHOENIX, decided he needed to be roughed up before filming the battle scenes in the epic Gladiator, so as to ensure he looked the part. But L.A. Confidential (1997) hunk Crowe decided a few beers and some invaluable acting advice would prove more useful. He explains, "It was actually RICHARD HARRIS' idea because Joaquin was very nervous on the set and I went to Richard and said, `Mate, what are we gonna do with this kid, he's asking me to abuse him before takes.' So Richard says, `Let's get him p***ed.'... We talked about how he requires an external force to get him into the moment and through a number of hours and a number of cans of GUINNESS, I got the point across to him that it's actually an internal journey and everything he needs to do with the character lives within him."

I found an older article about Joaquin on the JUICE-magazine-page from December 1998: Headstrong - Joaquin does it his way -

Joaquin Phoenix does not like to sit down when riding the subway. Rather than getting comfy on the crowded seats, Phoenix prefers to stand near the door, close to the exit, and that’s only in the end carriages of the subway train. “I don’t like to sit,” he says. “I always stand. Right here.” It seems that appearing uncomfortable and free to bolt at any minute is more than just one of this young actor’s onscreen traits. .................. go on here

Also new is the article from iCAST.com - they interviewed Joaquin about "Gladiator" - and only about "Gladiator". He is talking about why he had chosen that movie, what was it like to work with Ridley Scott, about never watching a Gladiator-movie before (he actually never did!), about putting on weight for the role, and and and ...

Here is a short summary of Joaquin`s visit on the Tonight Show yesterday from the
David Letterman Page:

JOAQUIN PHOENIX: yikes - We learn Joaquin has dental problems and needs root canal. We also learn Joaquin wants a hug from Dave. Dave spurns his advances while Joaquin pleads, "Just give in." Eventually, Dave gives in. Gee, he's easy. Joaquin is appearing in the new "Gladiator" movie, which opened today. He brought a clip
along with him. "My name is Maximus, General of the Army of the North, and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next!" Joaquin said something about the last time he was on the program and it not going too well, so I did some checking. I looked at Wahoo back issues and this is what I had written about Joaquin. It could have been used for Friday's appearance as well.

From October 6, 1998 - Show 1092
"Joaquin Phoenix: odd man. Early in, I wasn't sure how the interview was going to go. I also wasn't sure if he was wearing his own jacket. Looked like he borrowed it from someone smaller than he. Joaquin reminded me of someone, maybe a hardened Richard Lewis. No, there's someone else there. I'll have to see him again. Talk about Liv Tyler? Seems like Joaquin and she just broke up. Joaq kept avoiding the subject. I'm probably wrong. I'm typing this while I'm watching. Dave just mentioned how Joaq reminds him of Pauly Shore. Maybe a little bit, like when he says hello to his friends. Anyway, it'll come to me who Joaquin reminds me of. A little Richard Lewis, a little Pauly Shore. I'm still missing the third piece of the puzzle."

Do you wanna know with whom Joaquin went to the "Gladiator" premiere? He took his Mom!

Send me your opinion on "Gladiator" and I will post a collection of your reviews! my email

Interesting detail from "TIME" magazine: Ridley Scott testet Jude Law for the role of Commodus, before he decided to take Joaquin.
"Gladiator" opens today (in America)! Check out
DreamWorks Gladiator FanPage for the latest on "Gladiator".

(reminder: Joaquin is on David Letterman tonight!)

A BIG THANKS to Ann who typed three articles for me! The first is from "The Sun Herald Newspaper" (from Australia, April 30, 2000).

It is about Gladiator, and how nervous Joaquin was about doing it, and about which advice he got from co-star Russel Crowe. The article brings a bit about his biography, about his travelling-time, and going back to acting (
he read for stuff like Lassie Comes Home - dog and whale movies).

Joaquin Phoenix's brooding quality on screen seems to transmute off camera. Dressed all In black, his thick hair slightly unkempt, cigarette dangling between his left fingers, there's a hesitation to his answers to even the most obvious of questions. He pauses continuously, emerging nervous and agitated. He's clearly unaware of the kind of charisma that generates from the screen. As the villainous Roman emperor he plays with a flawless English accent in Gladiator, Phoenix is an arresting and hypnotic presence. It appears, though, that he doesn't realize how good an actor he is. ..... go on right here

The Second Article is from "JUICE" magazine (from Australia, too)
It is a really interesting and quite funny interview with Joaquin:

Do you get stopped a lot by...

The police?  Sorry.

...by people on the street? There are all those websites dedicated to you. Have you seen those?

I actually created all of them.

Seriously, is that frightning?

[Waves his hand] Whatever.  Occasionally I get stopped.  I'll tell you what happened to me recently: I was going to meet my friend at this restaurant, and this guy keeps looking at me.  I walk in and he shouts, "Hey!  Hey!" and I'm like [quietly], "Hey." He's very loud, "Love the fuckin' work!" And I was trying to leave and he slaps his hand out in front of me and shouts, "My name is Jerry." I said, "Joaquin." And he goes, "Who? Naw, Vince.' He thought I was Vince Gallo. I tell you, I'm mistaken for other people all the time.

I did this Vanity Fair cover with all these other actors, or whatever, and this guy chased me down the block.  I kept saying, "No, you're mistaking me for somebody else.  I don't want to sign." He said, "You're the only one who hasn't signed," and so I said, "Oh God, I feel terrible.  OK, where do I sign?" I go to sign over to where I am and he goes, "No, no, Mr. Maguire, you're on the next page."
.....

Who will you bring with you to the premiere?

I'll be honest and I know this sounds weird, but my significant other right now is myself, which is what happens when you suffer from multiple personality disorder and self-obsession.

Are you going to get your hair cut for Cannes?

I'm just going in a gold leaflet Speedo.

go to the whole interview

Here is the third and smallest article:

Movie Magazine Australia (Issue: June 2000)
Joaquin Phoenix

First things first you pronounce it Wha-keen. Whakeen Phoenix. He's explained this before, can you tell?

The Venezuelan-born American star began his life travelling the world with his tightly knit, hippy-style family that included sisters Liberty, Summer, Rain and brother River.  At one point, Joaquin reveals, he asked his father why he didn't have one of those names too.  The two promptly chose Leaf as his new name.  He went back to Joaquin in his teens, a few years before his 911 call failed to save the life of his brother River outside a Hollywood nightclub.

Joaquin made his acting debut in Space Camp and has worked steadily ever since, in Russkies and Inventing the Abbotts (when he started dating co-star Liv Tyler).  He starred in To Die For with Nicole Kidman, 8MM with Nicolas Cage, Clay Pigeons and The Yards.

But it was after receiving critical acclaim for his performance in Return to Paradise, that Joaquin was snapped up by Dreamworks to star in Gladiator, their most expensive action movie so far.  The film follows the story of ancient warriors battling to save their empire and Joaquin plays Commodus, Emperor of Rome.  It was shot in the UK with Russell Crowe, Djimon Hounsou and the harddrinking Oliver Reed, who died during filming.  The 61-year-old actor played warrior Proximo and, having completed several scenes in the picture before his untimely death, animatronics and special effects wizards were brought in to superimpose Reed's image on scenes not yet shot.

Joaquin has a reputation, even by friends, for being 'moody' and 'inarticulate' but they also say he's "a really talented musician, a good painter, a vegetarian and very committed to the environment"

"The reason I keep making movies is I hate the last thing I did," he reasons.  "I'm trying to rectify my wrongs."

Well, that wasn´t all for today:

There's an interview with Russell Crowe on reel.com.
The interviewer asked him what it was like working with Joaquin. Here's the "snippet" from the interview:

Q: What was it like working with Joaquin Phoenix?

RC: Joaquin has a completely different viewpoint on the world, and that made for some very, very funny conversations. He's a cracker, mate. I love him. Joaquin needs to have somebody spend some time with him so that he can relax about the things he's doing. It amazes me that he has no recognition whatsoever of just how f***ing good he is. He can do a scene and bust you apart and then he'll say, "I've gotta do it again, that was terrible." And then he does it again and it's even better.

Q: What were some of your funny conversations about?

RC: We had some very straight conversations. He's a young fellow that's gone down a couple of strange roads in terms of his technique. We talked about how he requires an external force to get him into the moment; and through a number of hours and a needs to do with the character lives within him — he just has to be able to get in touch with it.
