| "The actors were all good. Jack Elam used to be an
accountant for Hopalong Cassidy; he had thousands of metal coins showing
Hopalong on his horse. He had also worked as an accountant for Bogeaus. When
I read with Jack, I thought he was very good and, as Bogeaus didn't need
an accountant and he wanted an actor, I insisted that Elam get the job. (...)
The only person I had trouble with was Teresa Wright.
It should have been obvious that, with the speed at which we were forced
to shoot, everyone had to be ready to do their scenes at the drop of a hat.
Not Miss Wright. She insisted on being treated as a star. I simply didn't
have time to 'baby' her. I admired her acting ability, but thought she was
plain stupid to try to play games with me. If you accept the assignment,
don't bitch because it has to shoot at top speed.
