"Legende John Wayne: One remarkable
fact was clear from the start: no one in the world could play the leading
role of J.B. Books but John Wayne. At the beginning of the picture, before
the credits on the main title appeared, we saw shots of the younger Duke,
in sepia, plying his trade as a shootist, gradually growing older. We also
used 61 feet of the Duke from Red River, shot in 1948; 9 feet of the
Duke from Hondo (1953); 13 feet of the Duke from Rio Bravo
(1959); two 13-foot sequences of the Duke from El Dorado
(1967). James Stewart und John Wayne: Needless to say, they played their scenes as only Duke and Jimmy could play them - perfectly. It was very interesting to watch these two old pros working together in complete harmony and accord. They knew that I knew that they knew what they were doing. Just about all I did was direct traffic. Don Siegel. A Siegel film. S.1/2; 23; |
