Alien Trilogy is meant to run along similar lines to the first 3 movies. The first part has you exploring the base on from Aliens, the second wiping out the xenomorphs in the prison camp, and the third going back to the Bone-ship from the first movie. You are Ripley, but this never seems to mesh quite properly with the feats you can achieve, and it is probably better if you think of yourself as an anonymous marine grunt. It has less emphasis on gunplay than Doom, but the aliens are more cunning, and you need a more tactical mind to survive. It is initially very hard, but once you get a few of the better weapons, life becomes easier, a bit. Less skilled players may be put off initially because of this, but it's worth sticking it out. Skill emphasis is on reaction shooting and agility. Suspense is well maintained, and as you walk along you keep expecting a face-hugger to jump out at you, but your never quite prepared when they do. By the time I got to the third part I was getting bored, things just seem a little to familiar, level design was very average, and you got annoyed by the numerous dark bits. This was unusual, as even a lamp or low-light goggles (Space Marine Issue) seem remarkably inefficient at cutting through the gloom. Sound is used well to build atmosphere, lighting is dark and moody, but the ugly sprite-type aliens look blocky up close. I think that the Alien Doom wad file, which is pretty old now, is actually a better game. Best played late at night, with the lights turned down.
