Gran Turismo is the racing game.  The only thing that stops this from being perfect is the menu interface is at times poor, and a limited number of tracks (11 and then racing them reversed).  There is no car damage either, apparently the manufacturers didn't want people to think that their cars could be damaged, they felt it might tarnish the perceived safety values.  In many ways it is still better than V-Rally 2, choose this for production car racing, and VR2 for rally driving.  Compared to Ridge racer Type 4, I would have to say RR4 is prettier, but the flow and feel of the game isn't in the same class as GT.

The sounds are amazing, that throaty grunt of a Dodge Viper, through to your high pitched whine as you redline your Honda Civic.  Graphics are almost photo-realistic, no pop-up, but some clipping.  The frame rate is very well maintained, making it feel very fast as you drive around.  There is also a hi-resolution mode, but with only 4 time-trail tracks.  You can save your replays, and the GT mode is huge, as you try to develop your skills (and car) from Sunday racing to world class action.

This really is a quality racing game, until they develop VR, you are not going to find a more thrilling drive.

Extra Parts:
Buy one car and outfit it with all the parts you want then save the game. When you have enough money buy a second car of the exact same model. Get in it and go race. When the change parts screen comes up go into it and you can change its parts to the ones on the first car. Note - this only works for parts, not for weight reduction or racing modifications. You can then sell the car for more than you bought it for
